I agree but we don't know any of the facts just yet, alternative or actual.
That doesn't matter, by the end of his briefing we'll be told HMRC owe Newcastle £55m.

Are you being serious? Can you provide a lengthy list of the number of businesses that the under-staffed HMRC have exposed in the last year or, just to give a bit more leeway, the last decade? What punishments have materialised as a result of such exposures?

Sadly, i have better things to do.

I am sure 99% of tax evasion goes unpunished for the reasons you state, but the fact HMRC and possibly the fraud squad are on to them will mean in this case no stone is unturned. As for the punishment, we will have to see what the crime is first.

Both clubs have had some odd deals with Marseille, having bought from them and sold back to them. Maybe it has something to do with that and HMRC thought it looked shady and are just looking into it.

As it is Newcastle 'a big club; 60 point deduction which would put them in relegation or deduct every point gained in the games that the player/players played in.

Seems a lot going on to just be looking into it? They've arrested Newcastle's MD!

Indeed... just wasn't sure if they have a fixed points deduction or if they're allowed to just make up a number.

It is fixed.

Small Club (eg Luton) = 30 points.
Big Club (eg West Ham) = shit yourself and just tell them not to be naughty again.

You know if they were punished we would have clueless goons telling us for the next ten years that the only reason we got promoted was because of this.

From The Mirror, below. If correct, it doesn't sound like a footballing related matter that could lead to a footballing penalty being imposed:

HMRC have announced that they have arrested "several men working within professional football industry for suspected income tax and national insurance fraud".

I tend to agree

HMRC Enquiries into companies in this instance Newcastle Utd would not give powers to arrest individuals within the club. From the information out in the media to date it sort of looks like potential individual wrong doings by an individual, in this case, Lee Charnley.

HMRC set up a ''Special Office'' in Telford to Investigate footballers and football clubs in the late 1980s. That all moved in the last 10 years or so and Specialist teams were set up which linked the players, the clubs and other outside media sources. Lots of manpower went into investigating football and has proved a lucrative ''claw back'' of unpaid taxes for HMRC. Long may it continue because why should all these wealthy people avoid paying tax due. They get paid loads of money. It's only greed that makes them not want to pay tax on what is very large sums of money.

Pay tax according to the laws of the land, that's what I say. No more, no less.

Well this is a story and a half. I am so looking forward to attending the court to watch proceedings if it goes that far. The only link I potentially see in transfers between Newcastle Utd and West Ham would potentially be ''sell on clauses'' in the Andy Carroll Transfers. I can't off the top of my head think of any other players moving between those clubs directly or indirectly

Think you'll find it's related to (separate) deals with French sides, not between the two clubs.

I can't imagine Toon fans will be too displeased, they loathe Charnley and will see this as a good way to get rid. As a football-based penalty is unlikely, it's an added bonus for them after the promotion.
