It's not labour that has overseen the largest increase in food banks in the uk.
.

Maybe not,but they did see there UK introduction.....Labour and the EU to be honest oversaw the banking crises and introduction of the food banks......it's hard to blame anybody really.

It was under a labour government that we finally finished paying off the Second World War to the Americans but hey continue with it was all labour fault if it makes you happy.
We had a world recession not seen since the 1920's, an economy built on services rather than production so first to be hit and difficulties when recovering.
Smart financial advisors suggesting less regulation and the creation of derivates that have no link to companies just speculation. Then the creation of buckets of loan stock so you can't tell what your buying.
Whilst there have been government failures it is the bankers who got the country into this mess and they are creaming off the profits whilst leaving toxic debt in national ownership.

It wasn't labour that is about to take 3 more billion out of schools.
It wasn't labour that took 4 billion out of social care and then puts 1.5 billion back and says its is fixed. ( it won't be going where it is needed but back to affluent areas).
It wasn't labour that wants to take 22 billion out of nhs.
It's wasn't labour who said they would balance the budget by 2015, then 2020 then give the target up whilst borrowing more money than every labour government previously.
It's not labour that has overseen the largest increase in food banks in the uk.
It's not labour that through benefits sanctions has killed vulnerable citizens yet continues this practice.
It's not labour that thinks by cutting benefits to the disabled will get them back into work.
It is the Tories that have reduced taxes to the rich and continue to accept large organisations with foreign tax arrangements to continue whilst small business owners have increasing business rates and struggle to survive.

But it was Labour that made this country going on its knees to the IMF begging to be bailed out when their economic mismanagement andollusion with the unions meant we could no longer pay our bills, and no one would lend to us. This was the last elected Labour government*

*as defined by some on here Blair was not Labour

bankers wages might be a good start

What do you mean by that bland statement?
Do you mean create legislation for the remuneration a PRIVATE company can pay it's employees?
Do you mean having a different TAX system for people in a certain profession?

I get you're a lefty and probably envious of others success (which I'm not by the way, and I don't approve of excessive taxation - 40% is more than enough). The problem is the large corporations using tricks to avoid tax, but this problem is an international one and not a national one.

Your snide and easy comment is part of the problem with politics, taxation and spending. No-one wants to have a real, sensible and honest discussion about affordability. For example, the public sector workers in the past retiring on 2/3 final salary after working for say 23-30 years. Just think about that. A fireman could work from 20 until 50, and then retire on 2/3 final salary (index linked) for another 30 years.

Until you lefties want to discuss everything honestly, we're pissing in thw wind. Pathetic comments about bankers just prove it.

What is it with the lefties? Are they really totally economically illiterate?

First, they moan about austerity (which, by the way, we haven't had in the UK contrary to popular belief), then, because the government has kept the level of public services high (NHS, education, benefits, pensions, etc.), they then moan about the level of debt.

The level of deficit (not debt which is an accumulation) was f*cking high because of the total, incompetence of the last Labour administration (which didn't reduce national debt during the realtive boom years in the early 2000's). So, when the recession happened, there was no real safety net and the deficit shot up. The deficit has been reducing, but of course, until there is a SURPLUS then the debt will keep increasing.

SO, please can these SUPER INTELLIGENT (yeah, right) lefties advise what should be cut IMMEDIATELY to reduce the deficit and to start to reduce the national debt.

What is it with the Tories? Are they really totally economically myopic?

I'd start by making corporations pay their fair share of tax. I'd then develop and build the woefully imbalanced economy with manufacturing being a key element. Id invest a higher amount of taxes in education. Tories focus so much on cutting they seem to overlook everything else in the economy.

I understand your desire to stay in the EU with regards to free movement of people and human rights. I do not understand your stance that the EU is some kind of economic safe house.

Spain, Greece, Portugal, Ireland and Italy (to name just a few) have all had huge financial issues and disgusting levels of unemployment.

The economy was the main reason I voted leave.

It's how the EU stop countries leaving, once your in their pockets you can never ever leave, and that's how they want it. They keep the people at the top of those countries happy with job offers and massive pensions at the end of their political careers, so they can push the EU agenda even further. The EU are the wrong ones here. I'm hoping the French have a referendum and leave like us, because the EU has got out of control.

They spent that (having sold at low prices of course) and left a message for the incoming government laughing that "I'm afraid there is no more money". Absolute disgrace, that disregard for the people of this country should be enough to keep this shambles from government for decades to come

The bankers caused the crisis in 2008. Let them pay for it. And people voted for Brexit despite dour economic forecasts, which proves they don't care what the City says anyway. Screw the casino bankers' gambling deficit. Decent elderly & hospital care, decent schools, minimum wage of £10, end to zero hours contracts, proper taxes on the rich to pay for it all, renationalise the railways and utilities (without compensation in the case of Southern Rail.) And we're out of the EU soon so Brussels won't be able to interfere. Go Jezza.
Make June the end of May!

Yes, go Jezza! The best thing you can do as the country actually needs a credible opposition.

Its probably because despite all of these things, the Tories still keep cutting taxes for the better-off in society. Not cutting capital gains tax, corporation tax, inheritance tax might be a decent start to reducing the deficit.

Also, a lie to say they are keeping the level of public services high, huge funding cuts are proposed for schools. Meanwhile they are cutting £22 billion from the NHS, and £1 billion from social care while the cuts to corporation tax, for example, cost £1.1 billion

It was a joke. Outgoing ministers often leave jokes for their replacements, its a light-hearted ritual that has been ongoing for a long time

Really, make your mind up.

One minute you're on about the deficit and the Tories being economically incompetent, then you're saying that all they want to do is cut.

Now do you wonder why I said that, until there is a sensible, adult, intelligent debate about taxes, benefits, the economy and affordability, we will constantly have this phone "left/right" battle. But please, at least get a line and stick to it. You're just picking random throw away sound bites and not being consistent.

Both left and right on here seem to be so blinkered to their own view that everything is black or white with no grey. There is a middle ground somewhere which is not being properly exploited by any third party leaving many of us voters virtually without a vote.

About time we all started taking responsibility and think about paying a bit more for our healthcare, cut back on the waste, and put a plan in place to start training our own doctors and nurses again so we don't need to bring in people to do the jobs. We also need a plan so we put money away for our old age, so in the event of needing a nursing care the facilities and care is there for all. When is a government going to come and out say what needs to be said and stop trying to please everyone.

It wasn't funny. He was there to serve the country not ridicule it. A qoute from him in the Guardian

" I am so sorry. David Cameron’s daily flourish of my leaving note at the Treasury helped hurt the party I love. And offered sheer offence to so many of the people we want the chance to serve. Party members ask me: “What on earth were you thinking?” But members of the public ask: “How could you do something so crass? And so bloody offensive?”

I’ve asked myself that question every day for five years and believe me, every day I have burnt with the shame of it. Nowhere more than when standing on doorsteps with good comrades, listening to voters demanding to know what I thought I was playing at. It was always excruciating."
