I don't think that's how things work, even if clubs are near. People who support Leyton Orient (when it would be easier to support West Ham or Tottenham, say) do so for a reason. Many years ago, I found myself wondering what I'd do if Archer & Bellotti's plans had come to fruition and the Albion had gone to the wall. I certainly wouldn't have started turning up at Selhurst, or Fratton, or some random Premier League team.

I wasn't sure any other team could ever fill the void, but I did start to think that maybe, given time- and no realistic Albion-related option- I could maybe have given Fulham a go at some point.

I spoke to a Fulham fan about 20 years ago and asked “What do you do when your team goes under.” Fulham had had a near death experience not that long before and he said to me,” You stop going.” I think he was right.
