Chris Hughton: "Taking Brighton up would be a bigger achievement than Newcastle promotion."

“I had a very strong team at Newcastle and, in the end, we won comfortably enough, but expectations were high. The expectations were less here going into the season so, as an achievement for this club, it is probably bigger.”

Top chap as always

There's an interesting take on this via the Newcastle fan site; The Mag
http://www.themag.co.uk/2017/04/chr...rightons-imminent-promotion-newcastle-united/

"Back in 2009 at Newcastle, Chris Hughton may arguably have had more talented players but he inherited a total mess and the players as a group were far from united.
Mike Ashley also sold anybody who there was a decent bid for and didn’t give Hughton a penny to spend that summer.
Relying on loans and free transfers/free agents, things could have gone the other way. The disgraceful attitude shown by many players during the fall into the Championship could have carried on into the second tier campaign and it was surely down to Chris Hughton that this didn’t happen.
I think he is one of the most underrated managers in the top two divisions and there is an argument to say that he is certainly the best English Manager we now have, alongside Eddie Howe maybe."

Great video link with Paul Hayward on that page about his personal battle.

Having fought to keep their best players then there was no reason why they couldn’t do it this time, though it did depend on managing that disappointment from a year ago.

Apart from three pretty big clubs coming down from prem with parachute payments and being outspent by pretty much all our rivals.

Actually, the bad vibe did filter into the next season but only the close season.

Newcastle got hammered 6-0 or 6-1 in a pre season friendly at Leyton Orient and after that match he went straight into the dressing room and said to every one of them '' Look if you don't want to be here then tell your Agent to find you a new club, because if you don't want to be here then I don't want you here. Some duly did leave but the ones who decided to stay, knuckled down and won the League at a canter.

So he does know how to deal with the ''Billy Big Balls Players'' as well. He is a great ''man manager and does it in a nice way if he can but some players need an arm round them to make them perform and others need a kick up the arse occasionally. He is just good at recognising which ones need what
