US drops largest non-nuclear bomb in Afghanistan

Washington (CNN) - The US military has dropped an enormous bomb in Afghanistan, according to four US military officials with direct knowledge of the mission.
A GBU-43/B Massive Ordnance Air Blast Bomb, nicknamed MOAB, was dropped at 7 p.m. local time Thursday, the sources said.

The MOAB is also known as the "mother of all bombs." A MOAB is a 21,600-pound, GPS-guided munition that is America's most powerful non-nuclear bomb.

The bomb was dropped by an MC-130 aircraft, operated by Air Force Special Operations Command, according to the military sources.
They said the target was ISIS tunnels and personnel in the Achin district of the Nangarhar province.
The military is currently assessing the damage. Gen. John Nicholson, commander of US forces in Afghanistan, signed off on the use of the bomb, according to the sources.
This is the first time a MOAB has been used in the battlefield, according to the US officials. This munition was developed during the Iraq War.

Typical of the yanks to call it a battlefield, the war finished in 2014.
Probably aiming for that airfield in Syria!

Taken from another site, some more info on the bomb:
The bomb is equivalent to around 11 TNT, while the bomb that dropped on Hiroshima is around 15,000 tons. It has a blast radius of around a mile from what is being reported. So as many people as you can cram into a 1 mile block is about as many casualties you can expect if you were to drop it there.

BOMB RADIUS DAMAGE
Up to 1,000 yards: Obliterates everything.
Up to 1 mile: Knocks people, tents, light buildings, cars and jeeps over within 1-mile radius.
Up to 1.7 miles: shock wave kills people, causes severe damage to buildings, equipment, blows trucks, tanks off road.
Up to 2 miles: causes deafness.
Up to 5 miles: shakes ground, breaks windows.
Up to 30 miles: 10,000 foot high mushroom cloud visible.
Also interesting is that Russia has the FOAB (Father Of All Bombs) which is claimed to be 4 times as powerful as the MOAB.
