Sorry for the long winded description but after past weeks shocking performance surely some words have rightly been said. Compare him to Tomori though Tomori looks twice the player at a younger age who looks like an honest young pro with bags of potential willing to give the game his best shot, I think we all know who the better example of the two is.

I too noticed him 'warming up' on his own but (perhaps being charitable) one could equally suggest that he was being ignored by the rest of the subs, so we don't know if he was sulking or being ostracised - or both. I noticed at one point that he and Norwood were inches apart and not a glance or word was exchanged between them. None of us really knows what's going on there, but CH clearly sees something in Akpom - who may yet feature in our run in if injuries befall our squad forwards. I actually felt a bit sorry for him when he was subbed vs. Blackburn. Agreed, he was very poor and, for a lad at this stage in his career, Saturday was a gilt edged chance to shine. A 30,000 partisan home crowd, an opposition we were expected to beat and chosen by CH to start a game. He won't get many opportunities like that. But he blew it, and I'm sure as a professional that will haunt him more than the rather unhelpful boos he received when he was subbed. I sense there's probably something there but, sadly, we haven't seen the best of him yet. Let's hope he improves because we might yet just need him to do a job for us.

Maybe he'll score a bunch for Barnet in a couple of years or else just retire aged 23/24 and live a comfortable life with his premier league money

I recall Solly when Chris first came in and most people thought he should go out on loan but CH knew the type of lad he was and he knew he needed an arm round him and his confidence built up so he kept him at the club and played him and that turned out to be the right decision. I think you have to judge Chris' judgement and not someone looking in from the outside and making rash guesses

This is an interesting thread. Akpom must have spent at least 10 minutes doing stuff on his own. It's a fact. I saw it and I commented on it at the time. Quite why some of the usual suspects like Simster would suggest it was only a few seconds is beyond me. However the question is whether he was isolating himself or if the other lads are isolating him. I don't pretend to know the answer, but the other lads were laughing and joking with their routines and he was not involved or involving himself. He wasn't warming up for the game at all and I wonder if the lads are making clear that he isn't going to disrupt things either with his attitude or anything else.

Akpom might suit a side that plays like Leicester, knocking balls over the top for him to run onto.

If he wants to have a career in the top two leagues in England he's certainly going to have to up his work rate. Jogging around half arsed is never going to endear a player to the fans, specially if you're not scoring. That said, the booing Saturday when he was subbed was harsh. It's his loss if his career goes down the pan. We aren't reliant on his (lack of) goals. He goes down in history as another loan that didn't work out.

Apart from this, how many times was he caught offside on Saturday?
Pathetic that he could not adjust his runs.

Oh yeah, it was – just thought it was an weird thing to be doing as part of a half-time routine.

I wasn't having a go at him, I didn't boo him on Saturday and haven't got a clue what his attitude is like. I'm not buying that completely, just as I'm not writing him off completely yet either. As others have mentioned Tomori had a bad start (as did Duffy and probably a few others this season) and they managed to get the fans onside pretty quickly. Same as BFG*– I was thinking yesterday about how much stick he came in for after the Lincoln game and now he's winning Man of the Match awards!

Will Akpom do the same? Haven't got a clue, but if the regular front three stay/get fit, I can't see him giving us the opportunity to find out.

And yet the reality has been very different for Chuba Akpom at Brighton as he faces up to the very real prospect of departing the Gunners this summer after an unremarkable loan spell in which he has arguably gone backwards.


Arsenal had earmarked a move to the South Coast as the perfect opportunity for Akpom to go and play at a competitive level at the top end of the Championship in a progressive team who hold footballing principles not dissimilar to those at the Emirates.

This was the opening he had been waiting for after failing to oust anyone from above him in the strikers pecking order in North London, but it is becoming clearer and clearer that he is either not capable of taking his chance or, perhaps more worryingly, that he simply can't be bothered to.

That is the accusation being increasingly levelled at Akpom by fed-up Brighton fans, who turned on the striker during last weekend's 1-0 win over Blackburn Rovers by booing him from the field as he was substituted on the hour mark.
