With modern communications, is there still a time delay between voices when having a telephone conversation between UK and USA.

Almost certainly as there is a delay in the sound between television reception I have between BT Vision and Terrestial (in my kitchen) ERR Terrestial is sooner !

So the possibilities are endless, look at news reports from afar and you will see that picture and voice are not in sync ! but I am sure someone who knows about these things will come up with an explanation !

Yes. Radio waves have to travel to a satellite and be reflected back. This makes a tiny, but noticeable, amount of time.

Or electrical signals travel through cables on the sea bed of the Atlantic Ocean. This also takes time.

I guess it depends on what type of phone/link you're using. I haven't noticed any delay for several years now using either work, home or mobile phones or VC/Skype/facetime etc.

Yes.

But signal latency can be counted in milliseconds on the highest speed networks, so it is less noticeable these days and tends not to affect regular conversation.

Not what I was hoping to hear.:( I have been approached by a very persistent but good scammer who claims to be calling from Boston USA. I can hold a phone conversation with him as if he were in the UK and i was hoping the absence of a delay would catch him out.

No doubt about it, there's even a time delay on our soft phone system at work (and we only take calls from Sussex). It makes trying to speak difficult, especially if we get on echo of our voice from their end too (which we sometimes get). Not enough bandwidth for our building I think.

Have you rang him on the Boston USA telephone number on that ad?

I suppose the time delay is akin to when you respond to an article by BG, only waiting for the reply in the time vacuum of NSC

If you're watching cowgirl porn from America there's about a 3 second delay between yee and hawwww!!!. I may be exaggerating slightly though.

managers suckered in to shiny tech, but dont want to pay proper price? it may not be bandwidth though, softphones imo are a bit shite. i have daily calls with India and US, you wouldnt know the people are thousands of miles away, but will notice those on the softphone with shitty sound quality, excessive background noise or poor voice level. those on physical phones usually sound clear.
