Another reason I like living in Brum.Took the Grandson into town on Saturday to spend his pocket-money.Six minutes into the City centre,and upstairs from New Street station into Foyles,John Lewis,and then 2 minutes walk through the link to the Bull ring for the Disney shop,Entertainer,Build-a -Bear etc.Tram service to Wolverhampton,train to Walsall,bus to Merry Hill,integrated transport.Just shows Labour works in local government.

Sadly the incompentents called the Greens ruined speed of travel through Brighton pandering to a small % of uni students and cyclists turning most roads into car parks

What was it about the Green-led administration which stopped driving into the city? They didn't close any roads. They didn't ban any cars. They continued with the cycle paths started under the Tory-led administration.

There has also been no change of direction (no pun intended) on traffic management policy in the city since Labour became the lead party.

So your post doesn't really make much sense.
you forgot about the poor recycling.

Seconded. If it's just not frills shopping with maybe lunch and coffee we just bomb over to Crawley. Yep, it's soulless but you can park, it's never busy, it's all in one place and cheaper.
Brighton is okay but there's only so many times you can wonder through North Laine gawping at Hello Kitty merchandise and quirky window displays while sidestepping hipster dick'eds and students who still think it's a novelty to be a screaming queen.

This. We've got The North Laine like you say for unrelenting kitsch, The Lanes for overpriced more of the same and expensive jewellery. Where's the B&H Factory Outlet equivalent of Gunwharf Quays in Pompey? Where's the quality Adidas store? Marina is the obvious place, but that's for some reason a ghetto of tat and boarded-up Retail Space For Rent.

On almost all occasions I can get from Mid Sussex to London Rd car park in 25 mins max from where it is a pleasant stroll through (or to) North Laine. Know the back doubles and you can avoid every jam apart from the Beaconsfield Rd one.

The Marina really is a baffling mess of abandoned shops and confusing pedestrian walkways.

They could put underground parking underneath East Hove Lawns, and West Hove from the King Alfred to the Sea View restaurant, underneath the bowling greens. Then people wouldn't have to go right into Brighton to park.

Eh? The speed of road travel through Brighton was ruined by the growth in car ownership and, more particularly, by the growth in car use for journeys that can better be made by means other than cars.

What would any political party have to gain by 'pandering to a small percentage of univ students and cyclists'...? Then there is the small matter of every party voting it through at some point or another.

It's the unsustainable increase in car usage which has slowed down traffic. Fancy moaning about the traffic when you're a part of it.

Although this would have to be at the cost of all the businesses which use the archway properties that stretch under the road. Noy sure if it goes further, more fanciful though.

If there was parking underneath the Hove lawns and up to the Sea View restaurant, could probably use underneath the road for parking as well, it would ease the congestion in central Brighton without redesigning the whole seafront completely.

It was an incredibly fanciful idea, with plenty of imagination, but devoid of real consideration.

If there was parking underneath the Hove lawns and up to the Sea View restaurant, could probably use underneath the road for parking as well, it would ease the congestion in central Brighton without redesigning the whole seafront completely.

One has to consider how much seafront traffic is there for people looking to park in that vicinity. In other words, if you're looking to head into central Brighton, why park a mile and a half away on Hove seafront?

A good example of why it is important to know the difference between then and than.

You've just told us you want to stick needles in your eyes followed by going shopping in Brighton on a Saturday. It would make reading the price tags quite difficult.[/QUO

Blaming car ownership is as ridiculous as blaming students. The real problem is the same one it's been in the 50 odd years I've been born and lived here. Lack of investment in a sustainable transport system. No roads worth a light, no trams or mass transport system, no park and ride etc etc. Instead all we have had is schemes that reduce the available road space while doing nothing to encourage people out of their cars other than trying to make it as painful as possible. The monorail idea, while probably punitively expensive would've encouraged people out of their cars. In London you have options other than driving, here you don't.

A plague on every local political party and their lack of vision.

One has to consider how much seafront traffic is there for people looking to park in that vicinity. In other words, if you're looking to head into central Brighton, why park a mile and a half away on Hove seafront?

Not everyone would be looking to head into central Brighton, lots of visitors just use the promanade and beaches and in fact those who do are probably forced to park centrally.

East and West Hove is a good place to park for the day even if a quick shuttle bus is used.
