Early Leavers

People choose to leave early for whatever reasons, but I do find it irritating when people arrive 5 minutes after the game has kicked off.
The very same people leave 7 minutes or so before the interval and return 5 minutes or so into the 2nd half.
Massive game last night, if some people cannot buy into that then they never will.

I have no comment to make on afterwards, but it does *irritate* me when posters suggest it is easy *just* to get there earlier.

Not everyone has to be as avid as those who remain. I stay until the end, but each to their own, and I doubt the players are counting the number of empty seats that suddenly appear and feel rejected or dismayed. If they are, they should be released, and made to queue up in a packed line to board a train and go home miserably.

Bumper crowd too. Reckon if we'd still been 1-0 there would have been similar numbers making for the exists. Been the same for 5 years.

Presumably this shows then that a lot of them don't HAVE to leave early, despite their claims otherwise. When it suits them, they'll stay an extra 5 or 10 minutes.

Even from a logistical issue, I just DON'T get it.

When everyone leaves early, I would be even more convinced to stay to the end, clap the team off and then catch the train/bus without the rush of thousands of people leaving at the same time.

Personally I think people can do what they like, what is wrong with it, there must be a reason. It's ridiculous complaining about people arriving late and leaving early when you don't even know their circumstances.

Understand and not a pop at you. Clearly there are people who have genuine reasons for finding it hard to arrive early and genuine reasons for having to get away early. But on Saturday, I doubt that accounted for a good 2/3 of the ESL.

I'm not saying I get it, understand it, or ever leave before the final whistle myself, all I'm saying is that the early leavers do it week in week out whether there is a last min winner against us or not.

Of course leaving early is to suit the person leaving, it is their decision, I'm just saying it's not like it only happens when we lose or something bad happens.

in my case, quite simply because everyone else does. If we ALL stayed to the end, so would I. I don't particularly like leaving the stadium half full when the team could do with a lift having just conceded but if I don't, it will take another nearly an hour longer to get home. As it is, I got home near Bristol at 1230, leaving at FT means a lot longer queue for bus, and longer to negotiate the roadworks on M4 because they start to implement the lane closure between 10 & 11.

A little understanding at least for those of us who support the Albion from a long way would be appreciated.

You haven't read some of the previous posts. There were problems with the P&R buses last night. Pasty said he stayed to the end, had a couple of pints, and then went to join the queue, which was still right back to the stadium.
It was obvious before the game, there was a problem at the Racecourse, as there were only one bus at any time, when generally there are two or three. There were huge queues to get to the Amex, so you can't blame people leaving early instead if waiting for over an hour to get back to their cars.

Got home just before midnight, having, as ever, stayed to the (unusually bitter) end. Find it odd that some leave on 88 minutes (odder than 80, in some respects) but I find it odder still that some people get so angry about it - to the point of shouting at strangers in the ground, or crying on the internet for days afterwards.

One point I'll add to the fray - don't assume that everyone leaving early 'doesn't care'. There was a chap sat (rarely sat, actually) a few rows in front of us in the ESL last night, who was clearly feeling the magnitude of the occasion. He celebrated the goal like we'd won the World Cup in injury time. Used many words not strictly encouraged when the ref made a call he didn't like. Looked like his house had burnt down when the equalizer went in. This guy clearly, clearly CARED very much indeed. He left with a couple of minutes of injury time remaining - I'm certain because he just couldn't bear to witness the away celebrations.

Each to their own.

There are problems on the trains, getting out of the car parks and on the buses unless you get to the ground early and stay after for a pint but that is not possible for a lot of people who have a long way to go, Children to get home or early starts and or late finishes from work. what is wrong with that, it's their money they use which benefits the club but it has to fit in with their lives.

I know several older folk who regularly leave early to beat the rush and have no problem with that.
I don`t like people leaving for half time early...presumably Pie or Beer more important to them !!!.

It's quite simple really. When it works well, the transport is fine. Unfortunately, there are so many instances of it not working well (whether it's buses, rail or road issues) that people have a bit of a sense of dread about getting home, particularly after evening games when there are more likely to be problems, and a need to get up for work the next day, or are with young kids. This contributes massively to early leaving - and I completely get that leaving 'before the rush' to secure a place way ahead in the train/P&R queue/car park exit can easily save 30-60 mins on a journey.

Add into that a game situation where we really didn't look like getting anything after their second went in then it's hardly surprising a lot of people took the risk of missing a potential goal of the season equaliser to get home an hour earlier. It happens at every ground

After years of trying all the options I've largely taken any guesswork out of it by parking a couple of miles away and walking in, so I pretty much know when I'll get home after (traffic permitting). I was back at home around 10.40 last night. I stay to the end and clap the players off (which also allows time for the stairs to clear so no big deal), but if others choose to leave a bit early to carry on with their lives it's up to them. Doesn't make me a better, or them a worse, fan but I personally don't want to miss a minute of the action. Each to his own - if I had a much longer trip I might act differently too.

Same goes for rushing for catering on 40 mins and not getting back to your seat until 50. I'm there to watch the football so don't plan on missing any of it buying food or drinking - but that's my choice. I actually find this harder to understand than leaving early.

I should thank them really. I left just after the whistle, pretty much walked straight onto the next Brighton bound train and was in London by 11:30. Never got away from the Amex so easily before.
