Apart from money, I wonder what his motivation was.

They were reporting that he had had enough of the shyster con artists who play in the prem!

It means one of the shit championship referees will have to step up, and they in turn will be replaced for us by an even worse league one ref.

Premier League referees are, of course, well within their rights to support football teams but they must declare their allegiances to the Professional Game Match Officials Limited.

Mark Clattenburg announced he was swapping the Premier League for Saudi Arabia this week - and then declared his love for Newcastle United.

With his time officiating in England at an end the County Durham born official no longer needs to maintain any sense of impartiality.

Premier League referees are, of course, well within their rights to support football teams — few would bother getting into the sport if they didn't grow up following the game — but they must declare their allegiances to the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL).

Clattenburg never took charge of a Newcastle game during his time in England, and the same goes for other referees with the teams they support.

The Complete And Utter Shyster, often accused of being anti [insert your team name here], does in fact not have any particular strong feelings about any top tier club. The 48-year-old, who grew up in the Wirral, actually supports National League side Tranmere.

Andre Marriner, meanwhile, supports Aston Villa while Martin Atkinson is a Leeds United fan.

Below is the full list of top referees who openly support football clubs.
