The irony there being that as a newly qualified driver if you get 6 points within 2 years of passing your test you get automatically banned for 12 months and have to resist your test.

If he didn't, however, it works like this; you can have more than 6 points on a provisional license and still drive. Once you pass your test, the points stay on there and you can still drive. If you get ANY more points during the first two years your licence is automatically revoked and you have to re-take your test.
