I'd convinced myself that I wouldn't bother with SM records, gigs, etc but a changed world makes them seem that more vital again, and I'll have to revise my former view. I'm genuinely intrigued by how they'll tackle Brexit, precisely because I have no idea what their/Jason's stance on it is.

Same thing happened with me. I left Key Markets alone. Really enjoying this one.

Yeah it's a big step up, I remember being disappointed by their first album.

Ha! You're not the first to let me know that I'm well behind in getting into this band. I've a DJ friend who plays with the Radio 4A crew and she tells me that they are also brilliant live. I'm imagining something like Janelle Monae.

Neville Staple has a new solo album out and from listening to this track and reading a few reviews he's gone right back to his original roots with references to 2Tone (as with this track) and a childhood listening to bluebeat, ska and Trojan.

New single from First Aid Kit 'You Are The Problem Here' and it's a huge departure music-wise from their previous country-folk sound. I'm not surprised they've let rip with this tune though given that it rails against sexual assault on women - a huge problem right now in their native Sweden.

Love First Aid Kit, man that is good and very relevant as you say.

They always had a Psych influence, but now added a 60s garage trash fuller sound.

Will be playing this loud tonight with a bottle of wine with the wife after tonight's victory.

What do you think? I bought it on the day of release but only listened to it once up until today. On my second and third listen tonight and I love it. Can't remember the last time he's done something this good, may even be Gold 15 years or so ago.

It's very good, but with the ability at his disposal, I'd expect something really exceptional. I'm not convinced that this is it. I'll play it again tomorrow. In all honesty, I had rather forgotten that I bought it.

Soulwax make a welcome return with 2 albums and a new live show, with 3 drummers, called Soulwax Transient Program For Drums And Machinery.

I'm currently listening to Belgica which is them pissing about with different music styles and fictitious bands. From Deewee is their regular release out shortly.

Apologies if I'm late once again in appreciating a local musician but I've just been listening to Fink's new album 'Fink's Sunday Night Blues Club, Vol. 1'. The guy at Resident told me that he's an ex-Brightonian now living and recording in Berlin (have you seen him about, HT?). Our loss is clearly their gain. Proper old school blues and not one track on the album even close to being a filler.

The Resident album of the week is Valerie June's 'The Order Of Time'. Although now fully decamped in New York, her music is still fully-immersed in her Tennessee Southern Gospel/Americana roots. The album is a fairly slow affair, this track, Shake Down is about the paciest of the lot. One thing that does stand out was something I read in a review by the Independent and that's her very nasal twang does give her sound a shamanic quality to it. At first it's a little disconcerting but when you get into the album it just adds to the appeal.

French for Rabbits - 'The Weight of Melted Snow' A New Zealand duo that have expanded into a five-piece for their (I think) second album. They play a melancholy dream-pop/folk with Brooke Singer's vocals being the key to the sound of the band. She has a Nordic quality to her voice, it's low-key, not particularly strong but it works well. I came across this on Bandcamp but apparently the chaps at Rough Trade will be stocking it too so it's available to order through record shops. It does get very twee at times, perhaps a bit too much, even for me but it's a great album to dip in and out of.
