I think you misunderstand "socialism". Listen to the speeches of Benn if you want to understand why is he is (at best) completely conflicted.
The unions are split too.
My opinion is the left (and the centre ground) have been "democratically" lazy with their opinion of the EU. I'm particularly talking about the electorate.
Both have viewed it as a buffer against right wing excesses of successive UK Governments.
The centre have viewed it as a quasi government protecting them, the left whilst not being particularly happy it's there are very happy with what it actually achieves in terms of workers rights etc.
When faced with the question of ideology v reality, Corbyn has visibly struggled.

We've also got many many more civil servants in this country (all un-elected) than the entire employees of the EU.. Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I believe it's ten fold.

Forget all the lies, propaganda and manipulation they fell for, the biggest mistake Leave voters have made is believing our governmemnt will look after them better than the EU.
It’s pitiful.
But that 12 million will still be there should they decide to sell the apartment in the future, and in the meantime it helps get the best people to do business worth billions.
Why spend it in the first place? A 12 million pound apartment? Come off it. It’s a luxury pad for toffs to go on a jolly. Could be put up in Embassy apartments for minimal cost.
That’s the first inroad they make towards a deal? Spending 12m of our money. Doesn’t bode well. The Brexit gravy train’s first stop. And we haven’t even left!!
If the government can convince people they need to spend this they can convince people of anything. Disgusting.

It's for an existing individual and has 7 bedrooms. The government have confirmed only his family will live there and the staff rooms are being removed.

No I don't, I'm simply reporting what the Foreign Office has stated.
It's a bit like the expenses scandal where some in power think expenditure like this is complete normality. It was signed off by Jeremy Hunt.
He has a very important job, but is neither a member of the Saudi Royal Family or a millionaire rock star.
Does not appear to a functional government building, it's a home. Quite bizarre.
Reminds of Bob Kiley (remember him?) Livingstone brought him over to be Commissioner for Transport and put him up in 2m (2000 prices) house in Belgravia

That's the way the UK Government now rolls. Having had to sell off loads of properties to balance the books, it's now splashed out 12 million (on a family "home" / luxury 7 bedroom penthouse for one member of staff) to accommodate a previously unnecessary trade deal.
TAKING BACK CONTROL !
Just the start of the Brexit Gravy train. Ex-Ministers are bored of the Europe, there is a whole wide world out there.

As for respecting democracy, the poll tax was a democratic decision, as was refusing to give votes to women. Those decisions were wrong, and the public rebelled.
