Brighton & Hove Albion’s under-23s were edged out 2-1 by Newcastle United in a close contest at the Checkatrade.com Stadium this evening.
Joe Ward’s second-half equaliser cancelled out Sean Longstaff’s close-range finish in the opening stages, before the striker completed his brace to give the Magpies all three points.
Simon Rusk made three changes to the team that lost against West Bromwich Albion last week, with Sam Adekugbe, Jayson Molumby and Jack Harper all returning to the side.
The Magpies began the game on the front foot, with lone frontman Luke Charman swivelling inside the area to record an early shot, but his close-range effort rolled wide of the upright.
Albion struggled to get to grips with the early tempo set by the visitors, and paid the price after only six minutes, when Longstaff found space inside the penalty area, before chipping the ball over Robert Sanchez to break the deadlock.
The away side continued to create chances in front of goal, as Sanchez saved well from Charman.
Jesse Starkey recorded Albion’s first notable attempt at goal on the half-hour mark, curling a free-kick towards the top corner from 25-yards out, but Freddie Woodman got across his goal to collect with ease.
Adekugbe was then forced off injured, following a collision with Sanchez and was replaced by George Cox.
Newcastle continued to show more cutting edge in the final third, with Callum Roberts working space for himself on the edge of the penalty area, before unleashing a firm shot that sailed just wide.
Rusk’s team had a lucky escape minutes before the interval, as Sanchez’s attempted clearance rebounded off Roberts, looped over the crossbar and came within inches of doubling the away side’s lead.
