The most curious thing..
The Cod war was the last most pathetic remnant of empire - effectively invading a foreign country's sovereign territory (sea) for some cheap fish.
And afterwards we thought Argentina had a spurious reason for invading the Falklands - it was cast iron compared to this sad excuse of gunboat diplomacy.
It was ridiculous at the time, and with hindsight was completely ludicrous.

No, i never got that one, thank God. It was still an available punishment in the fleet when I left in 1990, althiugh very rarely used, I can only remember one lad getting it, and he went on the trot during his punishment. The worst I got was 28 days DQs, suspended. A long story.

Idiot from the Lowestoft broke IN to Pompey DQs, and took a dump in the exercise area. If his ID card hadnt dropped out of his pocket at the scene, he believed he would have got away with it.
After missing the Ark Royal leaving Ft Lauderdale.. The idiot blonde I had been out with, woke me up on the beach to watch the sunrise, and I saw the Ark silhouetted in the sunrise leaving harbour. Caught on the A1A highway by police, trying to hitch to Jacksonville, myself, and 3 others were taken police car, to police car all the way up to Jacksonville. Think it was along the lines of 14 days pay, 14 days loss of leave, and what seemed an interminable time spent in the kitchen.

Thats brilliant, he must have been a legend onboard though.
We had a Jock stoker, who got violent drunk in Gib, took on 3 coppers, got nicked an d got 28 days DQs, flew back out to the ship after his sentence, went sshore to celcbrate, got violent drunk, saw two of the same coppers,had a punchup with them, got nicked, 60 days DQs, came back to the ship in Pompey, went ashore to celebrate got violent drunk, took on the shore patrol, put one RPO in hospital, got nicked,90days in DQs, thrown out, services no longer required.

Wikipedia reckons we had 22frigates involved in the third Cod war, we've only got 19 frigates and destroyers in total now, so forget another Falklands war, we couldn't even manage a Cod war

Was running with a mate, from the police in Gib and we were running along the road that goes past the back of the Trafalgar cemetery. as we got near the turn down hill to the dockyard, my mate said, I cant run anymore, im going over this wall, behind this bush.
I will never forget the look on his face, when he realised the bush was the top of one of the trees that lined the back of the cemetery. Heard him hit every branch on the way down. Police caught me fairly easily, as I was on the floor in hysterics. My mate wasnt caught, and the **** didnt even injure himself that much, just scrapes, and scratches.

Same result too. Never argue with the Icelandics over a fish supper. Especially when they have pivotal American airbases stationed there.

I'm going on a cruise in October, one of the ports is Gib, I'm quite looking forward to it, I spent about six months there so know it well,I'm interested to see how its changed in the 26 years since I was last there

I was in Hong Kong in 74 and compared pics with somebody in 89 who went on business trip for Amex. The difference was unbelievable. Dont know if Gib has the space to change much tbh Enjoy the trip anyway. I certainly remember how dramatic it looks when coming into view
Went there with 27 NATO trips on one visit. That was a nightmare,, Couldnt get in a bar anywhere. If I was there on Holiday, I woud have been mightily pissed off

Singapore changed the most for me, I've been twice, 78, and 88, an incredible change in ten years, could have been a different place. And not all for the better , in my opinion

Bugis Street ! Singapore was my favourite place in the Far East. Marys food stall in Sembawang was epic.. A beautiful woman, apart from one of her front teeth missing who cooked like an angel. Never been back. We went into dry dock there, and was in Terror barracks for a couple of weeks. Luxury.

Bugis street had gone by 88 concreted over and they were pulling down the Chinese quarter when we were there. A shame
Reluctant to interlope on an ex services thread . . . just to update on Singapore; I spent 3 weeks there in 2010. I was doing a bit of teaching at NUS. I was 'billeted' (correct lingo?
) in the most expensive hotel in town. Stunning. In the morning I was headed in the opposite direction to the throng coming into town in the air conditioned underground passageways. The odd thing about the Chinese Singaporeans (if I can call them hat) is the unwillingness to look you in the eye. I felt like a ghost drifting past the throng. Odd. Mind you, one afternoon I had a visit with an old professor who spoke to me at length about his research, in his office. After 10 minutes I nodde off. After another 10 minute's kip I woke to find him still rambling. Because he hadn't looked me in the eye (you can guess the rest) . . . honour unblemished 
Singapore is a mad place. Rich, hot, humic, empty beaches (the Chinese don't like to get a tan as it makes them look like the Indians, who are a bit 'other' as far as they are concerned). Millions of boats in the water off the coast. Hot. Very humid. Did I mention that? I had a possible job opportunity, but the lure of the South East of England is frankly overwhelming.

The weather is mad, absolutely chucked it down bang on 5o'clock every day for 20 minutes, the roads turn to rivers, then it stops, and half an hour later you wouldn't have known it had rained at all
