Moving Home Games

Spent an evening in Burton and many of their fans were discussing how the club will move the big local derby games. Villa, Wolves, Birmingham, Derby & Forest are all only 15 minutes away by train but Burton can only fit 1400 away fans and less than 7000 in total.
Can a club just up sticks and move as and when they want to?
PS The ales in Burton are plentiful but the ground only sells Tetley Cream Soda.

Must have some VERY special match day trains, because the published timetables suggest:

Birmingham - Burton, 34 mins
Nottingham - Burton, 40 mins
Wolverhampton - Burton, 63 mins (1 change)

Tranmere used to play on a Friday night to avoid clashing with Everton and Liverpool

Probably make sense if they play both their games against their local rivals away , saying that cant imagine us doing that if we were still at withdean .

I added a few minutes. They seem to think Villa was only 11 minutes. Either way all these clubs are close by and would have a large away following. Was it not Wolves who took 7000 to MK Dons (cheap away day)? However way you look at it, the clubs are close by and the ground can not handle the quantity of away support they would bring. I'm sure Brighton will take 1400 to Burton when ever the game is played simply because it is a new ground to tick off.
Any way, the question is, can a club move home games? Derby was mentioned as the stadium to go to, distance 11 miles away.

Must be against league rules in that grounds are graded and have minimum criteria for the next division up.
As such Burton are allowed to keep terracing for first season in Championship but needs to be replaced with seating in they stay up.
Also cant see they can reverse fixture to give lical rivals an extra home game.
Moving to a different day is a different matter and would be allowed some flexibility

Its not a new ground to tick off having been there for the League Cup tie

The ground can 'handle the away support they'll bring' easily. If there's only space for 1400 then they'll only give them 1400 tickets. The only issue is maximising revenue - ie not being able to accommodate thousands more and collecting the cash.

The answer is no, pretty much - except in exceptional circumstances. 'Our ground is too small' is NOT an exceptional circumstance.

There is absolutely no way on earth the football league will allow then to move home games to another ground, if that's what you are talking about. FA Cup matches are no loner allowed to be moved either.

Or are you talking about moving home game days so there is no clash to attract more fans

Burton only averaged 4000 last season, lets guess that includes 500 away fans - so they only need 3500 home tickets. They should give visiting sides another 1000 or have to put up with away fans in the home end.

Its a delicate call, isn't it? They will need to maximise revenue to have any chance of competing. They could give half of the ground to the away fans every week, and effectively cede home advantage, but that's going to affect their chances too.

At the very least they should be cranking the prices right up for matchday tickets when the likes of Derby visit.

No chance. Been plenty of relatively small clubns in the Championship. Walsall were in there before with a capacity only slightly higher and those teams on their doorstep plus the likes of Yeovil, Scunthorpe, Bury and Grimsby Town.

Much quicker than Shoreham to Falmer then.

Thanks for the (mostly) sensible replies.
I thought whilst chatting to the fans that there is no way the FL would let them move to another stadium but they do seem convinced the club will try.
