How the hell does this chap fly under the radar? He runs and runs but never looks like scoring - he cost £1.8m and seems to be the first name on the team sheet. Why?!!

His stats are atrocious (4 goals in 33 appearances)

Baldock, not luck or fate, was the difference between promotion and staying down.

People whine on about the few goals we scored last season, after all there were only 23 teams who didn't score more than us, maybe, just maybe, had we conceded a few less.

"Doesn't score enough chances". "His stats are atrocious". "Scored 4 in 33 games".
Yes, but how many chances did he miss? I am not convinced he had that many to be honest.

Every week someone used to say "CMS missed a sitter". I don't remember many saying "Baldock missed a sitter" this season.

I was in neither the for or against camps for Barnes and I am the same with Baldock. However he is a centre forward and they are supposed to contribute towards the goal tally. And that is what he gets paid for folks, his return was piss poor last season, whether or not his other contributions were worthy. If you pay a bricky, you want him to build houses not do the hoddying (sp).

Even worse then as far as I am concerned.

Baldock plays in a side that creates countless chances and he is not getting any to miss.....you always hear pundit say well at least he is there to miss them etc...

I agree with you... he does not get enough chances and when he does he clearly is not taking them.

Because not every football fan is blinded by the goals per game stats and appreciates that some players hard work, determination, team work and selflessness can be a massive contribution to a successful TEAM.

Lets call it Barnes Syndrome.

No, let's not call it Barnes syndrome. Baldock isn't even half the player Barnes is...IMHO.

Stop being so patronising.

Or Gary Hart syndrome.

I never said he was as good as Barnes.

Stop jumping to conclusions.

You're clearly comparing him to Barnes. If not, why mention Barnes?

Furthermore, yet again, it's a Baldock supporter claiming that anyone who can't see his worth is a fan who knows nothing about football. That's patronising.

He isn't comparing Baldock to Barnes, he is comparing the OP's attitude to Baldock with the attitude a lot of fans showed towards Barnes, i.e. concentrating on goals scored and ignoring the bigger picture.

Or Gary Hart syndrome.

Indeed.

Although not Albion, this reminds me of a certain Mr Heskey.

It's terrifying how many ex players, especially strikers, put him in there "best 11" of players they played with (Michael owen etc), yet the fans just look at the goal record.

Just for 1066familyman I must confirm that I don't think Sam Baldock is as good as Emile Heskey.

Barnes' case was even more ridiculous, given that his goal tally was actually perfectly decent. Some of our fans are just plain thick.

As soon as I see someone judging a player PURELY on their goal to game ratio I know it's probably not worth reading any further.

How about a comparison of how many goals the TEAM scores when he's been on the pitch, compared to off it? That would be a more worthwhile stat to judge on, whilst still not giving the full story.

Reminds of Heskey being slated in his prime as not an England player. But when you look at all their important matches that were won he was always a major contributor.

Gary Hart started out as a great goalscoring hope. For his first 3 years, on the old 'mailing list' we had the 'O' Gary Hart challenge' to predict how many he'd score in the coming season. He never really hit the heights after season 1/2, and by year 3 the winning predictor (closest prediction) predicted zero :lolol:. (Hi Ceri, if you're still around). The prize was a Gary Hart signed programme, which the club fixed up for me to collect and pass on, every year.

His record . . . 373 games and 45 goals in 13 years. Plus four promotions. Loved the man.

It will be harder for Baldy but I'm happy to keep him in the squad for now, and hopefully he'll get some more specialist coaching, and who knows. Cheers.

He's a menace against the average, poor teams but gets found out against the better teams, as proved in the final run in.
How was anything proved in the run in? We won 5 games in a row, then had 10 men for the next 3 games, and in the last one (with 11 men) we were miles better than Wednesday despite a weakened squad.

Baldocks alright. He's average. Not a great player, not a terrible player. I thought he was utter garbage at Hillsborough in the first leg though, awful first touch, brushed off the ball too easily, moves consistently fizzled out as soon as the ball arrived at his feet, and carried no goal threat whatsoever (which tbf is the norm). He's industrious, chases around, but he's never going to be the difference between going up and not going up.
