David Crompton has been suspended as chief constable of South Yorkshire police, in the fallout from the Hillsborough inquest unlawful killing verdicts.
Crompton’s force had been criticised for its conduct during the inquest which delivered a damning verdict on Tuesday.
Dr Alan Billings, the police and crime commissioner for South Yorkshire, has the power to take such a decision but his spokesperson would make no further comment.
The news came hours after Andy Burnham, the shadow home secretary, had described Crompton’s position as “untenable”. Burnham’s comments were made in the House of Commons as MPs discussed the fallout from Tuesday’s inquest verdicts about the 1989 disaster.
South Yorkshire’s police and crime commissioner Dr Alan Billings said he
had been left with no choice other than to suspend Crompton with immediate effect following the run-up to and delivery of the Hillsborough verdicts.
Billings said he acted “based on the erosion of public trust and confidence”, adding “I suspended him with immediate effect and he left the building.”
He said he acted because of the “difference of perception” between the chief constable and Hillsborough families about questions the force’s lawyers had raised about the conduct of fans on the day of the tragedy in 1989.
Billings said the row was “proving an obstacle to our going forward” and came despite Crompton being due to retire in November.
The announcement of the suspension came barely four hours after concerns were raised in the Commons about the force’s conduct at the inquest.

Way to many people in there that shouldn't have been in there....must have been loads of ticketless fans that were let in as well.
Anyone can see it was ridiculously over populated,but the important thing is justice has prevailed for the family as wether it was over populated or not the police let them in.

The police directed the fans (who all had tickets - that has been proved in court) to the two central pens, down the tunnel. The two side pens were nearly empty.

Fair enough then as I recall seeing thousands behind a big gate on the road and some climbing over the gate.
Anyway it's done now and let's hope they punish the right people

As I said, the inquest and Taylor Report proved there weren't any ticketless fans. I've said this to you several times before today.

The fact is that assessment of crowds outside the ground and those in the stadium indicate that the numbers were consistent with the number of tickets sold. If there were people without tickets then they weren't at the ground and therefore played no part in the incident

The 96 were unlawfully killed,by a totally incompetent policing system,outdated ground safety and lack of medical cover for such an event. For me , if there are to be prosecutions,then its the people that lied and tried to cover up are the most culpable .

I know that The Mail comes in for a bit of stick on here,however if you been to Hillsborough and The Leppings Lane end you know how small the are from the turnstiles to the paddock/stand is and when i went i felt the same when i looked down to the new seat installed.
