Having a healthy, balanced diet is vital for footballers, but it is just as important for young people."
Bruno
Brighton & Hove Albion defender Bruno is challenging schoolchildren to swap sugary drinks for water for a week, as part of a city-wide campaign to reduce the amount of sugar being consumed by young people. The Spanish defender has teamed up with Albion in the Community (AITC), the Brighton & Hove Food Partnership and the Public Health Schools Programme to front the Sugar Smart campaign.
AITC will visit schools throughout Brighton and Hove to deliver assemblies on the subject, before challenging pupils to drink just water and milk instead of fizzy drinks every day for a week – with only one other drink, such as fruit juice, allowed each day with their main meal.
The defender, who stars in a promotional film which will be shown during the assemblies, said, “Having a healthy, balanced diet is vital for footballers, but it is just as important for young people.
“We are not saying children should never have a fizzy drink again. It is about all things in moderation. Hopefully we can help young people become more sugar smart and show them there are alternatives to always choosing sugary drinks.”

The campaign was launched at St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School and a spokesman for AITC’s schools team explained, “This is not a war on sugar. We want children and their parents to make informed decisions about the amount of sugar that they consume.”In Brighton and Hove, one in four children are overweight by the time they leave primary school and more than 300 children were admitted to hospital for teeth extraction in the space of just 12 months. Treating diet-related diseases cost the NHS in the city more than £80million a year.
Each child who takes part in the challenge is being encouraged to get their families to join them and by submitting their results online, they will have a chance to win a host of prizes. There are also 100 goodie bags available to win.
