At the pre-match press conference, Colin Calderwood reflected on Albion’s table-topping start to the season, the need to guard against complacency, the threat posed by Bristol City under Steve Cotterill and where the team can improve further.
Albion’s table-topping start: “It’s a terrific start, it’s exactly what we wanted, and does it surprise us? No, because we looked to win the first game and we’ve progressed from there. We are not surprised by it, but we’re very happy.
“There will be many hiccups within the season, but what we’ve done so far is that we’ve been able to get through those bumps in games and managed to come out the other side with the points we wanted.
“We’re happy, but we’re not satisfied and we look forward to what is really the meat and drink of the season, which is between now and the middle of March. What we do between now and then could really determine where we might end up.”
Avoiding complacency: “That is driven by the players’ drive and the personality of the team. They have been very respectful of every opposition we’ve come up against, but does the table turn when you think about where we are and where they are? I’m sure that the players don’t think about that and only about the opportunity of winning tonight.
"If we smell success, then we have got to jump on it and seize the moment.
“Winning your home games plays a major part in your success and we’ve got to use that advantage and the atmosphere which the fans have generated since the start of the season.”

Threat from Bristol City: “They were impressive the other night against Nottingham Forest and they had a very good start to the game, which obviously helped them. Their striker, Aaron Wilbraham scored a couple on Friday, so he will be a dangerous player for them.“They were very successful last year and it’s the first time we’ve come up against a team that doesn’t play four at the back.
“We will have to adapt to that a little bit, but we’ve got to focus on what we do and do it well again.”
“Their manager has got a strong personality and he has recruited really well through last season.
They had a terrific year; I saw them three or four times last year and they were very impressive.”
Areas for improvement: “There are moments in games where we need a little bit more of control. After we score the first goal, we need to hold on and not concede in order to see games out.
“These are markers for the players to get to, but the bigger picture is about us maintaining what we’ve done so far.
“They have to have no egos or any selfishness about them, and they just need to play for one another like they have done.”
