Brighton & Hove Albion started the month at the top of the Championship pile and have stayed in pole position throughout September.On an emotional day at the Amex, when the Seagulls paid tribute to Matt Grimstone, Jacob Schilt and all those lost in the Shoreham Airshow disaster prior to kick-off, Chris Hughton’s men edged out second place Hull City 1-0 thanks to an early Tomer Hemed strike.
Albion followed the win over the Tigers with another three points over relegation threatened Rotherham. The Seagulls were not at their best but seemed to be heading towards all three points after goals from Hemed and Dale Stephens, but Jonson Clarke-Harris made for a nervy finale although the Millers couldn’t complete their comeback and Albion held out to win 2-1.

Back-to-back away trips were up next, starting at Wolves where Albion rarely come away empty handed. Once again the Seagulls did come home with something, but the 0-0 draw was somewhat frustrating for Hughton’s men after playing against ten men for 41 minutes.Hemed saw a first-half penalty saved, before Connor Coady received a straight red for a dangerous tackle on Liam Rosenior, however Albion couldn’t break down their resilient hosts.
The month ended with Albion earning another away point, this time at Bolton, but again the Seagulls left feeling they didn’t get the three points they deserved.
Bobby Zamora made his first start for the club since resigning in the summer, and he teed up Stephens to score against his home-town club. Jamie Murphy tapped in to make it 2-0 and everything was looking good for Hughton’s men.
But, Bolton’s Neil Danns halved the deficit and the game turned when Murphy was shown a controversial red card for a tackle in the second half, when it appeared the winger slipped rather than jumped into the challenge.
Down to ten, Albion defended valiantly but Gary Madine headed home an 94th-minute equaliser and the Seagulls saw their lead at the top cut to a point heading into October, as second-placed Middlesbrough beat Leeds the following day.
