Goals from Jordan Maguire-Drew and Thomas Byrne gave Albion a 2-0 lead, but the North Londoners hit back, as a brace from Edward Nketiah, a strike from Yassin Fortune and a penalty by Savvas Mourgos gave Arsenal all three points.

Buckman told seagulls.co.uk, “We made a good start to the game and we had some good chances early on, but Arsenal had some decent spells of possession in the middle stages of the first half as well.

“I felt that we defended well which was encouraging, came in 0-0 at half time and I was pleased with our performance in that first period.

“In the second half, we started very well and got in front then soon extended our lead, but we allowed them back into the game very quickly, which was a key turning point.

“We conceded a relatively soft goal within three minutes of going 2-0 up, and like in some of the other games recently, we’ve got to manage some of our key decisions better at key points in the game.

“That was crucial on Saturday and we came up a little bit short. Again we’re a young side at the moment and there are a lot of positives to take from the game.

“We played some good football in large spells and that’s something which we can take going forward.”

The under-18 coach believes his players will learn some valuable lessons from the defeat, but took confidence from the fact that his side can hold their own against one of the best youth teams in the country.

“They [Arsenal] were very good technically we learned that we need to defend well in spells and then have confidence in ourselves to go and play, attack and threaten teams at that standard.

“We managed to do that and scored a couple of good goals.
