Only we know that Messi and Izquierdo are good players, we have little to judge this player on, other than a 6th rated league he has excelled in, so although I don’t entirely agree with the sentiment of your post (admittedly two games isn’t much).

I'm saying that maybe judging a player based on 2 games with players he hardly ever plays or trains with is the wrong way to go about it. Yes the dutch league is at it's worst right now, but Izquierdo came after performing well in the Belgian league, which is far lower quality than the dutch league. You still have to be a decent player to perform at the very top of the Eredivisie.

Worth note that Izquierdo came from a good season in a league which is considerably worse than the Eredivisie.
It's clearly a gamble on whether the top scorer can make the step up.

Wood had a good start and lost his way a little. Gray is awful for Watford.....

Re the Dutch league.
Memphis Depuy (?sp), was also prolific and was quickly found out.
Haven’t top Belgium teams achieved a similar amount of success to the Dutch teams in the Champions League (I seem to recall Anderlecht doing okay, but I could be wrong).

Davy Propper has done ok coming from the Eredivisie
He was 21/22 when he moved to Man U and the big price tag raised expectations that he didn't live up to. He's still only 24 and has just had a very good season at Lyon.

My point was more that the players in bold have played in the Premier League after they were top scorers in the Championship. The other three were deemed not good enough to make the step up.
I would agree that Murray is the exception here only because of the minimal transfer fee received and the longevity of his Premier League success after this season.

What is clear is that value for money is not great in the championship for often unproven players.
Depay is an odd one as he wasn't awful in his first season at United but also wasn't the natural successor to CR7 as promised, and then José came in and didn't fancy him. Did the same as he's done for Luke Shaw this year and forced him out of the club. He was wonderful before José and he's been pretty great after at Lyon. He'll fly back into a top European team in the next few years without a doubt and much like the parade of good players united have made look awful throughout the years, he shouldn't be remembered for one bad season.
