Microwaves- essential kitchen appliance or waste of worktop space?

I tend to use mine to warm butter up when making cake icing, as I inevitably forget to remove it from the fridge an hour beforehand. Twenty seconds is enough to ensure it doesn't smash around the mixer bowl like a lump of concrete.

Have also steamed vegetables in it from time to time, as somebody gave me a steamer & they come out looking & tasting better than when boiled on the hob.
Use a good old fashioned butter dish, or grate the hard butter :thumbsup:

We have a microwave in our camping car but we've never used it. Don't have one at home.
One of the great cons of our time IMO.

PS: proper oven has been condemned by the Gas Inspector. Do I really need a proper oven?

I am not keen on pastry and pies and I have got a slow cooker.

I have a mate who cooks bacon in microwave. I'm not sure why, but I find this repulsive - although he says it is a healthier alternative to frying... and he probably has a point.

Surely grilling is just as healthy and you get it nice n crispy!

Scrambled eggs and a microwave are a coalition more evil than the last one.

Two saucepans - one half filled with water and boiling and a smaller one sitting on top.

Eggs in with a knob of butter (important) and whisk like hell.

Add pepper when you like but salt towards the end.

No milk, no microwave and easy to clean the saucepan.

I think I might have to try cooking scrambled eggs in microwave ??? How ?

The only drag with the normal method is cleaning the non-stick (still flipping sticks) heavy duty frying pan.

Because we don't like scrubbing pans afterwards.
Not had scrambled eggs not cooked in a microwave since god was a boy.

I got rid of the micro wave a year ago. The only times I miss it are for heating milk in the night when the toddler wakes & for making scrambled eggs
