James Marrs was left to rue a number of missed opportunities, as his Brighton & Hove Albion women’s side were held to a 2-2 draw by West Ham United on Sunday.

The Albion boss was delighted with the effort of his players, but feels that the squad are lacking a clinical edge in the final third.

He told seagulls.co.uk, “I thought we played really well on the day and that it was our best display in a number of weeks.

“Our performance was really good and we controlled large parts of the game, but just lacked a killer instinct in front of goal; that has probably been the story of our season.

“I can’t complain about the girls’ work rate and endeavour. We always focus on our performances, but it feels like a defeat.
*
“Unfortunately we’ve made two errors that cost us two goals. Very rarely do you go throughout a game without making errors, but I can’t blame the players that made them because we need to look at ourselves in the mirror up the other end.

“It’s always easy to blame players for making errors that cost you points, but if you don’t put the ball in the back of the net, then you don’t score goals.”

The draw leaves Albion three points behind league leaders Portsmouth, who claimed a 4-1 win away at relegation-threatened Gillingham, but Marrs says there are still many reasons to be optimistic going into the final two games of the season.

“Portsmouth can still lose one of their next two games and once that happens, then we need to make sure that we take advantage of it.

“We still need them to slip up and it would still have been the same situation even if we had won the game. We can only push them all the way to the end and we’ll pick ourselves up from this result.

“We could win next week and Portsmouth could lose, meaning the league would be wide open again. Consistency is key in this league and we’ll keep fighting until the end. We’re unbeaten in six games now and this could still be a valuable point for us.”
