Brighton & Hove Albion under-18s were beaten 2-0 by Reading on Saturday.
The defeat means Albion finished eighth in the Barclays Premier League South table and they will now face the northern division's mid-table sides in the play-offs.
Albion threatened to take an early lead, when both Josh Courtney and Dylan Barnett went close with long-range efforts inside the opening 20 minutes.
But Connor Pring went closest with a dipping effort from thirty yards out, forcing the goalkeeper to tip the ball over the bar.
The Seagulls were able to restrict the Royals to very few chances in the first half, with many attempts blocked well by Tom Cadman and Jamie Horncastle.

After a goalless first period, the second half was a very event contest with both sides creating chances to take the lead. The home side’s most dangerous attack came midway through the half, as a brilliantly worked short corner routine gave Will Collar space to get his head up and whip a dangerous cross into the penalty area. After some scrambling in the box though, the Royals cleared the ball to safety when an Albion goal looked likely.
However It was Reading who finally broke the deadlock, as Conor Davis was played through on goal and he fired home past Bailey Vose after 74 minutes.
Albion mounted pressure on the hosts as the game drew to a close, but Reading captain Jake Shepphard doubled the Berkshire side's advantage after he picked the ball up in his own half and floated a spectacular effort over Vose and into the net from around sixty yards out.
ALBION: Vose (GK); Courtney, Horncastle, Cadman (Cox 13), Barnett; Collar, Meyers; Tighe, Pring, Maguire-Drew (Meekums 85); Mar-Larusson (Ajiboye 70).*
