Brighton & Hove Albion manager CHRIS HUGHTON was delighted to record a third consecutive win at the Amex as his side moved nine points clear of the relegation zone.

He said, “Home form is very important and that is the same for any club. The large majority of clubs will find that their better results will come at home and we have to make this a very difficult place for teams to come to.

“Nine points is a big margin, particularly given where we were a few weeks ago, but for us it is about trying to win as many games as we can. If you look at our season so far, we have drawn a lot of games and at this stage of the season what it has shown is the massive difference that a win can make - getting three points as opposed to draws.

“So it’s a big result for us but we have to look forward to a lot of games in a very short period of time, use the squad in the best way that we can and try to finish in the best way that we can.

“We will use this seven-day break in the best way that we can. Certainly for those that have played a lot of the games, we will give them as much rest and recovery as we can, and of course for those that are pushing to get places in the team, it is a really good opportunity for them to get some work done.”

Derby County manager STEVE McCLAREN was pleased with his side’s performance on the night, but was left rueing a number of missed chances as his team suffered back-to-back league defeats.

He told Rams Player, “We grew into the game as the first half went on and we said at half-time that we could kick on and win the game. The way we played and created chances was great, we just needed that first goal.

“We did everything but score; football is won and lost in both boxes, not the middle, so we have lost because we failed to score through numerous chances and they have had two chances and they have scored two goals.

“Defending is about concentration and doing your job. Maybe we switched off because we haven’t had to defend at all – they had not had a shot before that – and they have had one shot on goal and scored.

“For the second one, I was just coming down [to the touchline] and they scored again. You won’t win football matches if we defend like that. But I can’t fault the attitude of the players; they were fantastic in that regard.“We have had a spell of two games in which we haven’t taken advantage of after two big home wins.”
