Southampton's success so far this year should be cheered by the majority of genuine football fans.

At a time when the Premier League is turning into a plaything for oligarchs and sheikhs, a proper club is punching through into the top positions by developing young talent and being shrewd in the transfer market.

It's not simply that we *should* try to follow their example. Frankly, for clubs like Brighton and the majority of the other 92, it's the only option we've got.

Very much this - unless 'new' teams break into the top 4-6 monopoly the Premier League will become ever more dull and predictable.

Two or more players a year coming through that are good enough to be in the first team
Two or more coming through that aren't first team standard but can be good for other teams and therefore fetch a decent fee

That's the dream. Maybe chuck in an extra youngster that's a wonderkid and will fetch upwards of £10m to help fund the rest of the team

Indeed. The 2+2 target, is the stated aim of the Baren academy system, and seems to work okay for them.

Southampton are now higher in the division than their previous manager and ALL their former players.
With a squillion pounds in the bank.

Nice work if you can get it.
