Albion*chief executive Paul Barber admits the club still have a lot of work to do this month to build on the early recapture of Greg Halford.
The Nottingham Forest utility player, back on loan for the rest of the season, was used from the bench on the left side of midfield by Chris Hughton in his first game in charge at Brentford in the FA Cup on Saturday.
Barber, who is working closely with Hughton and new recruitment chief Paul Winstanley, said: “We had conversations with Chris before he took the job so we knew exactly what he had in mind and the January transfer window is difficult for every the club.
“The best clubs don’t release their best players and the clubs that are struggling certainly don’t want to release their best players and there will be competition for those players that are available.
“It’s notoriously difficult. We probably won’t get all of our targets, that is the nature of the January transfer window in particular, but we know that we need to strengthen in one or two places and we’re going to work very hard to do that.
“Obviously, getting Greg Halford in and back until the end of the season was the first part of that strategy, which was important for Chris to have that extra cover.
“Greg is such a versatile player in so many positions but now we’ve got a lot of work to do in the balance of the window and a lot of hard work as well.”
Barber, who worked with Hughton at Spurs, says it feels as if the ex-Norwich boss has been in place longer than a week.
He said: “Chris is a very organised and methodical, professional. He gets on well with people, he knows what he wants, what he doesn’t want.
“The players respond well to him, the staff respond well to him and it does feel that he has been here for quite a while already.”
