Albion*boss Chris Hughton has warned it will be tough to replace Darren Bent during the January transfer window.
A striker is a priority for Hughton in the January transfer window after ex-England marksman Bent went back to parent club Aston Villa on the expiry of his loan spell and has now been borrowed by Championship rivals Derby County.
Hughton told The Argus: “The centre-forward one is always a tough one but generally teams in this division that have done well have had strikers that have been scoring goals.
“You look at Derby and Chris Martin is scoring goals on a regular basis.
“It is a tough one but you have got to be in there pushing as hard as you can.”
Hughton has an open mind about the type of striker he wants as he weighs up whether to start with Craig Mackail-Smith or Chris O’Grady in his first Championship game in charge at Charlton on Saturday.
O’Grady came off the bench in place of Mackail-Smith to clinch the 2-0 FA Cup win at Brentford in Hughton’s first match, which has been rewarded by another money-spinning fourth round visit from Arsenal.
Hughton said: “In any structure you have to have a focal point for the attack. The type of striker you have doesn’s necessarily have to be a specific type. You want a good striker, that’s what you want.
“If I look at what we’ve got in Mackail-Smith and Chris O’Grady you’ve got two different types of strikers. It’s not a necessity to have a particular type.
“You want somebody who can perform his duties well and, ultimately, score goals. Whichever way they do that has to be beneficial for the club.”
