Even in these Northern climes, my 2014 crop of very very hot chillies are still going well in the 'Towner of Glasgow'. Secret was to insert non safety match heads about two inches under the soil , the sulphur gives the chillies a rather hot taste.

I have put aside two from each type (six in all) to dry and be used for 2015s mega crop.

Harvested the last kilo of 2014's 'Cherry Bombs' yesterday and turned them into a large jar of sambal. Also cut the plants down to an inch above the join on the first shoots above main stem, to use for early stock. Plenty of seeds kept for sowing of new stock in February.

Not chilles or tomatoes but would like some advice on growing herbs. Have bought a packet of six different herbs from 99p shop which I intend to grow in pots but would also like to buy and grow some rosemary. Is it best to buy seeds or could I buy a plant from Sainsburys, veg section, and transplant it from the pot to a large pot. Will that grow and which is best? Many thanks.

Can be quicker and more productive to but those potted herbs and pot on in bigger pots. Chives and Parsley will both grow well if thinned out and repotted in to larger pots. I would grow the likes of Thyme,Sage and Rosemary from seed as you will probably pay upwards of £2.99 for a pot plant from a garden centre. The only exception to this is if you want a quite specialised variety of a herb as for instance, there are many types of Thyme available as plants but usually only " standard " Thyme available as seed unless you try,,,http://www.seedaholic.com/edibles/culinary-herbs.html?limit=50&p=3#Edibles

My wife & I have had an allotment for several years now, but unfortunately when it comes to growing toms outdoors, we still fall short of getting a decent crop.
Basically we have to pick them early off the vines (still green), beacause of blight spores that seem to blow from elsewhere on the plot. They are all put into a covered container with a banana to ripen them on.
My question is to you heroes, is it better to grow them indoors or outside in garden (no greenhouse available), where the result of any disease is minimal?

I've had problems before with tomatoes in the greenhouse - when you water the plant, make sure you don't splash water on the fruit or leaves - that's where the blight started for me.

As for chillies - I have 65 seedlings of 8 different varieties growing at the moment. I started them off in a heated propagator indoors, then once they got established, switched of the heat but kept them indoors in the propagator (I left it a bit long and some have got a bit "leggy"). I'm now re-potting them as needed into individual pots and they live in the greenhouse, still under cover in the propagator but unheated.

The temp in my greenhouse has gone down to 1.5C this week, but they seem to do fine if I keep them indoors a couple of days after re-potting them before sending them outside to the greenhouse.

The most curious thing..
I have a few tomato seeds sprouting indoors - nothing in the pots I left in an unheated garage, and none of the chilli or pepper seeds have shown any interest - indoors or in the garage. Probably too cold and not enough sun.

Yeah get them from the supermarket and pot them up. Just be a bit careful as most supermarket herbs are grown hot, so they're very soft and tender. Make sure you harden them off for a couple of weeks by putting them outside in a sheltered spot during the day and then bringing them in at night.

Reduced my Tomatoes down to 4 varieties....Balconi red, Ilde, Sweet aparitif and Shirley. Got 7 varieties of chilli and 4 varieties of sweet peppers, all growing well in the greenhouse.

Bought some seed potatoes to grow in a bag on patio Naris Piper and Duke of York early but when taking them out of the bag to chit, the tubers on the D of Y have all broken off. Will they grow some more or should I discard them and buy some more or another variety?

Struggling a little this year, Jalapeno's are slow, Joe's Long are slow too.I have some first year Aji pickled Frogs that are producing fruit but not many but my Bird's Eyes are not too bad. Trouble is I love pickling the Jalapeno's and this year I may not have enough to do even one batch.

Have emptied my grow bags of potatoes and quite encouraged by the amount that grew. Is it too late to plant some more for growing late? If not, are seed potatoes still available or could I just put some with sprouts growing in the airing cupboard to speed the sprouting up? I may just plant those as I would have nothing to lose really.
