Albion*have signed versatile giant Greg Halford on a month’s loan from Championship rivals Nottingham Forest to solve their centre-half shortage.
Halford came on for the last few minutes of the win against Wigan in place of Elliott Bennett on the right.
The 6ft 4in 29-year-old has also played at right-back, in midfield and up front in a career spanning almost 400 league games with eight clubs but manager Sami Hyypia confirmed he has been signed as cover for ankle injury victim Aaron Hughes, the third-choice centre-half.
Hyypia said: “That’s the idea behind it. I know he can play other positions but we have Aaron Hughes injured and both of the centre-backs (Gordon Greer and Lewis Dunk) are on four yellows so one yellow more and one of them will miss one game.
“Hopefully those yellows are not in the same game, then we would lose both of them.
“It looks like with Aaron it’s more positive than negative. Hopefully he will be back soon but it’s going to take a few weeks. The swelling is still there so we can’t have a scan yet.”
