Albion, then plying their trade in League One, beat Championship opposition for the second round in succession following a third round victory over Portsmouth.
Ashley Barnes scored the only goal of the game in the 16th minute, when his 25-yard strike was spilled over the line by Hornets keeper Rene Gilmartin.
The Seagulls came close to extending their lead after the break, as Chris Wood struck the bar with a volley, while Inigo Calderon’s effort forced a good save from Gilmartin.
The home side upped the pressure in the last 15 minutes with Danny Graham twice coming close to netting an equaliser for the Hertfordshire side, but Albion held on for a memorable win.

Adam Virgo’s 85th minute equaliser earned Albion a valuable point in their ultimately successful bid to avoid relegation from the Championship.
The hosts took the lead in the 53rd minute when Danny Webber latched on to Neil Cox’s pass and fired in his sixth goal in as many games.
Substitute Chris McPhee looked lively for the Seagulls since returning from injury and was denied a goal after some fine goalkeeping from Richard Lee.
But the Seagulls did not leave Vicarage Road empty handed, as Virgo’s volley sailed into the top corner to earn Mark McGhee’s side a share of the spoils.
