Having just heard it on the wireless I give you:-

I remember thinking it was pretty good, on release.
Yet everything else since has either been, at best the same, very poor, or disappearing up their own backside (no pun intended).

Elton John - Your Song

(It all went downhill from there)

Keane - Somewhere Only We Know

In my own humble opinion, this is the best. Bedshaped is up there, of course it is. Everybody's Changing is a dinger, and even later albums have produced magic like Bad Dream and Atlantic, but really - does anything beat Somewhere Only We Know?

Not sure this was their first single. That was Opportunities (let's make lots of money) which is a stomping tune in its own right. I stand to be corrected.

The seaside.
The Jesus And Mary Chain – Upside Down
Oasis – Supersonic
Huggy Bear – Her Jazz
The Libertines – What A Waster
The Indelicates – We Hate The Kids

Hmm, thinking about it there's probably less bands whose first single WASN'T their best.

I'll agree with your JAMC, but Her Jazz was their third (albeit their best) - Rubbing The Impossible To Burst was first. I'll add Mr Brightside, Heaven Sent An Angel by Revolver and Arab Strap's The First Big Weekend. Plus Sight of You by The Pale Saints

You're wrong :D But so is Stat Brother imo as this is probably my least favourite PSB track. And he's only chronologically right if he's talking about the original recording.
