Fans making their way to tomorrow's game via Brighton's London Road station will be greeted by the sight of an eight-foot long Albion themed mosaic, thanks to the work of a group of young people involved in an Albion in the Community project.

The group, who have transformed the station's subway with the mural, are part of 150 youngsters who have been taking part in the National Citizen Service (NCS) initiative, a national programme run locally by AITC for 16 and 17 year-olds.The four week programme, run over the school summer holidays, has seen the young people take part in a team building and outdoor activity week in Wales and participate in a range of learning activities at the University of Sussex and the Amex, including acting workshops and cookery classes.
Over the last two weeks the teenagers have put their learning into practice by planning and delivering 13 community projects across Brighton & Hove including the restoration of gardens at the city's Royal Sussex Hospital and the refurbishment of a local care home for elderly dementia patients.**

But, it is the station project which is likely to catch the eye of Albion fans. Working with local community organisation, the London Road Station Partnership, the group of 12 youngsters have designed and created the mosaic using tiles and equipment supplied free of charge by local company Sussex Tile and Stone and B&Q. The mural which features the club logo and a set of flying seagulls was officially opened in the subway at a special ceremony this afternoon.Speaking at the event, NCS Team Leader Amy Smith told seagulls.co.uk, "We wanted to use the seagull as the central theme of the mosaic because of AITC and the football club and the fact that so many fans will pass through the station on a matchday.
"Its been quite a challenge to get it completed this week but the result is amazing. The group have been fantastic to work with and they should all be proud of their work."
NCS student Orla Byrne, 16, from Brighton part of the group who created the mosaic added, "I never thought it would end up looking as good as it does. I use the station quite a lot so it is great to know that I have played a part in creating something good that will hopefully be here for years to come. I have learned a lot and gained so much confidence from being part of the project."
You can read more about this summer's NCS programme in pages 66 and 67 of tomorrow's programme and also catch interviews with some of the students pitchside before the match.
AITC will also be running an NCS programme for local 16 and 17 year-olds in October. To find out more and how to sign up e-mail dan.garrett@albioninthecommunity.org.uk
