The last time the two sides met Albion recorded an accomplished 2-0 away win at the Reebok Stadium. Winger Will Buckley was at the double, with goals either side of the break to move Brighton to within a point of Nottingham Forest, who occupied the final play-off spot. Albion took the lead in the 13th minute when Leonardo Ulloa curled a ball into the box and Buckley connected perfectly at point black range and although Bogdan somehow managed to parry the ball, Buckley was alert to fire home on the rebound. Brighton then had to defend well to protect their lead and Buckley secured all three points in the 65th minute when a defensive mistake allowed the winger to go one-one-one with Bogdan and curl the ball into the bottom corner.

Three goals in four second-half minutes helped Albion to victory over Bolton Wanderers at the Amex last season. Albion were behind at the break after David Lopez had put Chris Eagles' corner into his own net. After the interval it was a different story though as the Seagulls took Bolton by storm. Eight minutes into the second half Jay Spearing's own goal drew Albion level, as he headed Kazenga LuaLua's free kick into his own net. Two minutes later Inigo Calderon's superb low half-volley put Brighton ahead, before Will Buckley sealed the win and completed the three goal turnaround in the 57th minute.

It was the first time Albion and Bolton had met since 1993 and it was the Albion who should have won the game. Albion dominated from the off and could have been out of sight at half time, but Ashley Barnes failed to mark his 100th Brighton start with a goal as he missed from the penalty spot after just 14 minutes. Adam Bogdan saved Barnes' effort and then superbly blocked his rebound to keep his side level. Brighton went close again as Andrea Orlandi and Dean Hammond both saw shots cannon back of the crossbar, before Craig Mackail-Smith's header hit the frame of the goal. Brighton eventually took the lead when Bruno volleyed a superb goal from 30 yards ten minutes into the second half. It looked like that would prove to be the winner, but David Ngog dramatically equalised with the last kick of the game to earn Bolton a point.
