In the mid 70's I played in a pro-celebrity Spurs v Arsenal game at Cheshunt. Let me start by saying as a footballer I make a very good sax player. However, in total contrast to my natural abililty as a footballer I rose to head the ball from a corner in the first 5 minutes and forced an excellent save from the Arsenal keeper. From that point on I had 2 gorillas marking me wherever I went. I told them that it was a fluke and that they were wasting their time but they just gave me a sh*t eating grin and followed me everywhere. Got taken off before half time.

Forgot to add I represented England against Poland in 1999. Was only a fans game, but an absolute belter of a day. Played in a stadium not too dissimilar to Withdean. People had actually paid to watch the game and the crowd was about 2,000. Proper ref, national anthems were played and teams we're read out over the tannoy. Will have to dig out the photo's

I was just going to say Somerhill school as Hove park didn't have a football team, they were too busy playing Rugby. However you have reminded me that I played for the sixth form team.

Wonder if you were in my year at HP? We had a REALLY good rugby team but the football team seemed to play about once a year. Year above and below had football teams though.

Aymer Athletic (Sun)

Then joined the dark side and became a ref, got to county league reserves before giving up after getting fed up with it (did win level 6 ref of the year in the Sunday league though!)

Although I did play a couple of games for L&G III when they were desperate.

The Cuckfield United you played for, was it the one run by David Barnes (Chief Sports Writer NOTW)

It was run by a bloke called Dave, I didn't know what he did for a living. Basically it was a pub team based at the King's Head, I played for two seasons during the transitional phase when the kit changed from light blue to orange.

I knew about it but no I didn't play...it was for Mickey Bell who sadly passed away recently is that right? I was only about 15 when I started playing men's football for BHA around the late 80's and didn't play that many games for them, so can't remember many of the guys too well to be honest...although I do remember a few names!

That's right, it was supposed to be a reunion but was changed to a Memorial match in memory of Mick. we raised about £800 for the Hospice. All credit to Bowler for that.

We're going to do it every year now.
