Brighton & Hove Albion Women head coach John Donoghue believes his players deserved more for their stern defensive display, despite losing 2-1 to Gillingham at Withdean on Sunday.

The Seagulls took the lead through Paige Baker-Carroll in the first half. before second half strikes from Felicity Gibbons and Lisa Fulgence sealed all three points for the Gills.

He told Seagulls.co.uk, “They had the ball more than us and they were in the ascendancy a lot of the time, but if you set up a certain way and try and play counter-attacking football successfully then you deserve that opportunity, and we did.“We got the goal from Paige and we broke forward quickly, creating a number of opportunities.”
Donoghue also feels that there is room for improvement ahead of the next campaign, but praised the efforts from his players in a long season.
*“We control games quite well through the midfield and what we need to do is make sure we sharpen up defensively as a team and in attack, as we need to put away more of our opportunities.”
“I complimented the players on their hard work throughout the season because they do put in a tremendous amount of effort. You’ve got people travelling long distances just to come to training and it’s not a paid sport for them, it’s what they do because they love it and enjoy it so much.
“They’ll be a bit disappointed from this but that will give them a kick-start to put certain things into place and be successful.”
