I don't even bother with the Start menu any more or its apps.
Before my computer had an epic meltdown, I had a few apps for the kids to play, but never found anything great.
If I had to pick one app though, it would be Cheezburger, basically an app with a load of funny pictures.

Yes totally agree, 8.1 is a free upgrade a lot better.
Maybe he wants to do one of the myriad of things that are impossible or vastly inferior on a Mac
