Albion have completed the signing of Jonathan Obika on an initial one-month loan deal from Spurs, and the 23-year-old striker will be available for Saturday’s game against Birmingham City at the Amex (kick-off 3pm).
Head coach Oscar Garcia explained, “Our target was to bring an extra striker into the squad, alongside Leo and Ash, and as cover for Craig and Will as they continue their respective comebacks from their injuries.
“Jonathan is someone we have been aware of for some time – because Nathan has worked closely with him in the past at Yeovil and Charlton. It is known that we tried to bring him earlier in the season, but were not able to due to an injury, so we are pleased to have him here now.”
Obika, who worked with Albion’s assistant head coach Nathan Jones during loan spells at Yeovil and Charlton earlier in his career, fills the void left by Leroy Lita, who has now returned to Swansea City.
In addition to four spells with Yeovil, that saw him score 17 goals for the Glovers, and a ten-game, three-goal stint with Charlton, the Enfield-born striker has also played on loan at Millwall, Crystal Palace, Peterborough and Swindon.
He has been capped by England at under-19 and under-20 level, and this week scored six goals in an under-21 friendly for Spurs against Charlton which bizarrely finished 10-6 to the North London side.
