Why don't you cycle from Barnham into Chi, everyday?
You'll arrive mentally and physically in better shape.
It's flat roads and the big chunk of the journey through Oving will be all but silent.
Gotta be better and cheaper than an embolism.
Who knows, one day, you could even end up riding from Worthing to Chichester.

Good idea, bring a bike onto an already packed train .
That is very true, for all I know you might not even be allowed to take it in the first place.
I'm just pointing out another option to what sounds like a complete and utter ball ache of a start/finish to the day.
Which must be made even worse by chugging past a quiet country lane on a loving sunny morning/evening.

Watching someone do it 3 to 4 times within about 10 minutes is even better..
I prefer the one where the person on train just keeps talking through the tunnel without realising the signal has been lost, and then has to repeat everything again once they reconnect.

i was kidding myself that Perth was full of ignorant *unts but after just having spent three weeks in Sussex i can confirm that when it comes to seats on the train , Sussex is also full of ignorant , selfish #unts.
