From GOLDSTONE GHOSTS by Attila The Stockbroker

"Then Villa in the big crunch game. A thirty thousand crowd.
Bald Lochhead scored, but we still won the day.
Then up, and straight back down again. Brian Powney, brave and squat.
T.Rex, DMs and scarf on wrist, OK?"

1. Actually Bruce Rioch scored that day for Aston Villa, not Andy Lochhead.
2. Brian Powney is our guest on this week's Albion Roar.

Seaford's finest will be talking about his long career at the Albion, and life as a footballer in the 1960s and 70s.

We're on air at 12pm this Saturday on Radio Reverb 97.2FM, online at www.radioreverb.com, on DAB+ and on podcast on AudioBoom.

Great to hear Brian Powney (he sounds so young)...real treat for those of us who watched Brighton back then ...nice little snippets like Geoff Sidebottom not playing in matches over Xmas time because he didn’t fancy it

It was a great show. I love it when the Roar does the older players. I think it's because I've heard many of the anecdotes from players in the 80s and later - and possibly because there were more characters about in those days, I couldn't imagine a Sidebottom not playing at Christmas these days.

More 60s and 70s players please ...

How does the club unearth the next Lewis Dunk or the next Solly March? What is involved in getting kids to grow and mature to a level where they can make it as a professional?

Listen to John Morling, Albion Academy Manager, talking about the set-up at Lancing and across Sussex and Surrey, and how it interacts with the professional, senior side of the club.

We also touch on the Swansea game, plus there's Uncle Phil's Shirt of the Week Down Under.

We both found John interesting and informative about a side of the club we rarely get to know about. We certainly learned a few things.

On air at 12pm on Radio Reverb. Podcast available immediately afterwards.

How does the club unearth the next Lewis Dunk
Since mid 1970's every 3 years, a club representative gives a number 5 shirt to the 32nd person he sees, 8 days after Ascension Sunday.
From that day forth they are transformed into brilliant centre back.

Sadly the precise date is a little off for centre forwards.

Brian was fabulous company and a real chatterbox.

As ever with these things - especially with the players from yesteryear coming on - the best stories are the unbroadcastable ones he told in the pub afterwards.

Just listened to the Powney edition of the Roar.

With regard to the "A. Miller" who made his debut in the same game as Brian - it was Ally Miller. You might be interested in a website that lists all post-war Albion players (at least up until 2013-14) - BRIGHTON & HOVE ALBION : 1946/47 - 2013/14

Specifically, Ally Miller's details - Ally Miller

Another useful online resource is Barry Hugman's website - Barry Hugman's Footballers - Alistair Miller
Barry Hugman is the author of "Football League Players’ Records, 1946-1981", a publication which listed the details of all post-war English league footballers, which was subsequently updated with 5 further editions.

Currently listening to this week's Albion Roar Downunder, fascinating interview with Paul Ifill. This is a really nice addition to the Albion podcast library.

We have just two more shows to bring you in 2017. On December 30, we will be having our Albion Review of 2017 - a year which I could make a pitch for being the best calendar year in the history of the Albion. Bu that's a debate for next week...

This coming Saturday, in keeping with our love of supporting local businesses, we are delighted to host Simon and Tamara Larder of Ridgeview Wines, together with Joanna Hunter from Piglet's Pantry for a Christmas 'Which pie goes with which wine?' show.

And we'll talk about some footy, we suppose...

We will be LIVE at 12pm at the Open Market this Saturday on Radio Reverb 97.2FM.

Enjoyed the Tamara and Joanna show. Any idea when you'll put the end of year review on your website?

Roar regular Andy Bass joined Ady & Al for a review of 2017. From great days against Fulham and Sheffield Wednesday, through forgettable performances against Huddersfield and Nottingham Forest, to a sublime great free kick and, of course... April 17th 2017. And more besides. Plus Phil Shelley offers up a beauty of Shirt of the Year.

WARNING: May contain traces of positivity.

I've also written a few notes down as to why I think 2017 was the best year in the Albion's history. Up for debate, of course...
