I take all my pictures at 9M resolution which is massive if you want to e mail or post on a forum.

Can anyone recommend some reliable free software which can easily reduce the file size - Would this be done by reducing resolution or picture size, or indeed is that the same thing?

Download a trial version of Photoshop.

If you happen to stumble across a set of numbers that looks like they belong in the registration code box, then who knows what could happen.

gimp.

or for a few, you can just load into MS Paint then save as jpeg or png for a much smaller filesize, or crop or resize for an image of smaller visable dimensions. very basic though. Gimp gives you most the functionality of photoshop.

Uploading to imageshack lets you resize, and as it hosts it it gives you a link to post on forums/ in emails

Photoshop has got a superb setting where you can choose to resize loads of photos in a folder to a specific new size at the same time rather than one at a time... saves hours!

Afore mentioned Imageresizer does this also. You can select as many images as you want to resize, right click on the selection, set what size you want them to be changed to, 4 pre-sets, or custom size, and also you can retain the original image.

Corel is magnificent but if you want a good free one then go with Gimp.
