Gordon Greer in action against Leeds on the opening day of the season
Gordon Greer is poised to stretch his stay with Albion.
The Argus understands the Seagulls’ skipper and central defender has agreed in principle to a new contract and is on the verge of putting pen to paper.
Championship rivals Leeds United are now looking elsewhere after chasing Greer’s signature.
Albion implemented a one-year option on Greer’s contract at the end of last season. Details of the revised deal have yet to be confirmed by the club but he is likely to be under contract until the end of next season.
Leeds chief Brian McDermott is a big admirer of Greer and was eager to land him to strengthen his defensive options.
Albion head coach Oscar Garcia has been just as keen to keep hold of the 32-year-old Glaswegian.
Greer was a key figure throughout the reign of former manager Gus Poyet. The ex-Swindon stopper is also expected to play a leading role under Oscar, who has re-confirmed him as captain since taking charge at the end of June.
Greer is currently with the Scotland squad preparing for tomorrow night’s friendly against England at Wembley.
