Volunteers from the Brighton & Hove Retired Greyhound Trust will be bucket-collecting at the Amex Stadium tomorrow when Albion host Wolves, and supporters are encouraged to give generously where possible.
The Trust is a registered, independent charity, working alongside the National Retired Greyhound Trust and other local welfare organisations to ensure as many greyhounds as possible have a happy retirement, and retired greyhounds will be accompanying the volunteers tomorrow afternoon.
Each year approximately 9,000 greyhounds retire from racing, typically around four years of age. *Many never make the grade, or retire at a much younger age as a result of injury. Many racing owners will take their greyhounds home, but sometimes this is not possible, and in this case the Trust encourage the public to consider taking on a retired greyhound, as a pet.
The Trust is over 35 years old and was one of the first branches of the national RGT. From humble roots homing dogs straight from racing kennels, the Trust now has its own re-homing centre in the Sussex countryside, near Twineham.
The purpose-built kennels hold 30 dogs for homing, and are accompanied by two outside fields that the dogs are continually turned out throughout the course of the day.*
Fundraising volunteer Dolly Shew told seagulls.co.uk, “The greyhound is the original low-maintenance companion animal. Despite their well-deserved reputation as formidable athletes, they do not require large amounts of exercise, and the vast majority are perfectly content with two short walks a day, and they just love to relax on a comfortable bed.
“Greyhounds are placid animals and therefore are particularly good with children - they also make excellent pets for the elderly because they do not require large amounts of exercise. Most retired racers have lived exclusively in kennels, but will adapt extremely quickly to the more physically comfortable environment of your home.
“We rely heavily on donations and legacies in order to survive, as well as our own fundraising efforts. Any monies that can be donated on Saturday will be gratefully appreciated.”
