Tony Grealish, right of picture, celebrates victory in the 1983 FA Cup semi-final with Jimmy Melia and Jimmy Case
Tony Grealish, the man who led Albion out at the FA Cup final, has died at the age of 56. He had been suffering from cancer.
The Irish international played 121 times for the Seagulls and, most famously, was the man chosen by boss Jimmy Melia as stand-in skipper for the 1983 Cup final against Manchester United.
Grealish took over from suspended Steve Foster and led the side out wearing a headband – Foster’s trademark – in a show of support for his colleague.
He also played for Orient, Luton and West Brom. He was based in Devon at the time of his death having previousy lived in Marbella.
