Bridcutt was booked for a foul as he halted a potential Charlton counter attack on halfway.
Home fans - and the Albion management - were amazed when Hughes escaped similar punishment after clattering into Ulloa a couple of minutes later.

8:07pm
Albion were looking to progress through short, sharp passes. But a long ball out from Kuszczak into the path of LuaLua caused Charlton problems. The winger's cross was cleared for a corner, from which which Vicente landed a left-footed outswinger right on Calderon's head. But the right back failed to get proper purchase on his header .

8:02pm
Calderon took the chance to have a run, cutting inside Harriott but seeing his left foot curler float wide of the far post.

8:01pm
There was lots of movement about the Albion team as they looked to play their way through a Charlton outfit who were 4-3-3 in possession but 4-5-1 when their hosts had the ball.
David Lopez thought he was impeded as he looked to work a one-two on the edge of the area but ref Russell saw nothing wrong.

7:55pm
Albion stitched together a couple of lovely moves early on and the second so nearly brought a goal. Vicente's pass inside the defender invited Bridge to scurry to the byline and, from his low cross, both Buckley and Ulloa had shots blocked by defenders in the goalmouth.

7:51pm
As expected, Vcente was in a central role just behind Ulloa. LuaLua was first to offer excitement by outpacing two defenders out wide but his low cross was far too close to Hamer, who gathered.
The Charlton keeper also held on a minute later when Vicente curled in the first corner of the evening.

7:47pm
No change of ends. Albion going North to South. The match is in progress.

Right, let’s take a moment to give Charlton’s away record the attention it deserves. After all, I suspect there are people out there who might look at the league table and see this game as a home banker.
In fact, if we consider just away form, this one is more tricky than the Crystal Palace game recently.
The Addicks stand fourth in the away-only Championship table with eight wins and 29 points from 19 games. Only the top three in the division – Cardiff, Hull and Watford – have done better. That trio each have ten wins and 33 points.
Although Charlton’s away goalscoring record is not exceptional at an average of 1.32 goals per game, they still rank eighth in the division, compared to their actual league position of 16th. They have only drawn four blanks away from home. Only four sides have failed to score on fewer occasions on their travels.
The Addicks have the third best defensive record in away matches, conceding an average of 1.21 goals per game. They are just ahead of Albion in the away defence standings. Before Saturday, the two sides were level, having each coneded 23 goals in 19 matches. But Albion dropped back when they let in two at Nottingham Forest.
Finally, Charlton are currently on a three-match unbeaten run away from The Valley. The only side who can better that run are Forest, who have remained undefeated in their last four away games thanks to Lewis McGugan’s late, late, late penalty at Burnley yesterday.
To counter that, Albion are undefeated in six at home, a record beaten only by Bolton, who have not lost in any of their last seven matches at The Reebok.

Well, what an exciting line-up we have on view in the blue and white stripes. And that is nothing against Andrea Orlandi, the man who makes way for Vicente*tonight and is, let's not forget, Albion's leading assists-provider this season. Two wingers, Vicente in support of Ulloa, Bridcutt and Kuszczak both back. Let's hope it lives up to expectations.

FIFTY UP! But will Albion be doffing their caps and raising their bats to the pavilion (figuratively speaking) after a stylish win, just collecting a single or recording a duck as they mark their half century this evening? Running copy and selected tweets from the Seagulls’ 50th competitive fixture at The Amex are coming your way.
