Albion are back in the play-off places – but they will not feel like celebrating after a 2-2 draw at Nottingham Forest.
The Seagulls twice led, through the outstanding Leo Ulloa and Will Buckley.
But they saw two points slip away on 90 minutes when Henri Lansbury’s low shot squirmed under the body of Casper Ankergren, standing in for the unwell Tomasz Kuszczak.
It was an awful blunder by the Dane, who had produced some super saves in a battling Albion performance.
He was beaten first time with the aid of a deflection as sub Lewis McGugan let fly from an angle on 82 minutes.
That wiped out a powerful finish by Ulloa as Albion, after a quiet first half, came alive in the second.
They would have doubled their lead had Karl Darlow not produced a fine tip over from Matt Upson’s header.
Ulloa was also involved when Albion regained the lead on 85 minutes, laying off a pass for Buckley to shoot low past Darlow.
But there was to be a late sting in the tail of a game which got better as it went on.
Forest were convinced Albion should have been reduced to ten men in first-half stoppage time when Kazenga LuaLua was fouled and shoved over his opponent in retaliation.
Home fans bayed for a red card but LuaLua was shown yellow after referee James Linington had consulted with an assistant.
It was the final incident of a first half which failed to live up to expectations.
Albion offered no threat but remained on terms thanks to a couple of sharp Ankergren saves and Andy Reid’s unwillingness to shoot when he bore down on goal.
Reid tried what was either a cross or a chip and the ball sailed harmlessly past the far top corner.
Ankergren dived to his right to parry a Lansbury blast and later smothered from Darius Henderson after pushing out Radoslaw Majewski’s initial drive.
