A points deduction for Watford could mean the difference between Palace getting automatic promotion or being knocked out in the play offs.

The FL are as spineless as the FA and lack the backbone to clean up the game. Watford are in breach and the only penalty that would have any effect would be points deductions. They do it when clubs breach financial rules relating to admin which also quite often hits clubs under new ownership. Also, according to the report, they can sign players with approval so there isn't even any actual embargo.

At the end of the day, even if Watford do get promoted, the odds are that they would get relegated again, irrespective of any embargo so they will benefit from the money from the Prem next year and the parachute payments for the years after that assuming they do go straight down. In the meantime clubs that have toed the line miss out on that opportunity.

Don't forget this was one man who has now been banned rather than the club as a whole..other people within the club didn't trust/like Bassini.

Maybe that was part of their thinking but then they have taken since November to decide so goodness knows what was going on...

I wouldn't be surprised if the FL just didn't want the hassle of us appealing against docked points at this stage in the season.

They ley agents ruin the game and often allow clubs to go into massive debts so you do wonder if there is a real duty of care for the game.

With due respect that is the arguement trotted out by every club that has lost points since it was first introduced following the adminstration of Leicester all those years ago. As a club it is irrelevant whether it is one man that breaks the rules of the whole board and backroom staff, the team on the pitch will have been perceived by all to have benefited from those actions and that would transfer to new owners. The best comparison is with Pompey whose fans enjoyed two trips to wembley and european football on the back of an unsustainable business.

A more effective punishment would be points deduction to prevent Watford gaining promotion and the lucrative position that brings. However, history shows the FL and the FA are pathetic at dishing out this punishment. The FA failed to deal with the Tevez situation at West Ham when they should have lost points for fielding an ineligble player and again when QPR were linked with dodgy dealings over Faurlin. We've also seen lately that one club that fielded an ineligble player in the FA cup were still allowed to progress!

The charges were investigated by the Independent Football Disciplinary Commission not the Football League. The sanctions given to Watford and Bassini were also handed out by the IFDC the Football League only brought the charges
