Albion women have secured progression in the Premier League Cup with an impressive 4-0 win away at Millwall...
Albion women cruised into the last-16 of the Women’s Premier League Cup following an emphatic 4-0 win at Millwall; a result which sends the Seagulls through with Charlton.Goals from Kirsty Barton, Catherine O’Hagan and a brace by Kim Stenning secured Albion the three points and a top two position in Group Two.
Jay Lovett’s side knew that a point would be enough to secure qualification; but they went about their business with ruthless efficiency, in a second-half display which was arguably their best 45 minutes so far this season.
In contrast, the first-half was a much more even affair, with the hosts creating a number of good goalscoring opportunities, putting a good deal of pressure on to Albion’s defence.
Shauni Griffiths had an early shot saved by Lucy Mangan, before Emma Whitter’s fine run down the right resulted in an inviting cross that somehow eluded the entire Millwall attack.
But the more clear-cut chances were created by Albion, as Stenning saw her shot rattle the crossbar, before Faye Rabson met Paige Adams’ cross with a diving header that went just wide.
The deadlock was broken on the hour mark, when Tammy Waine’s corner was met by Barton’s powerful shot inside the area that beat Lionesses’ keeper Francesca Gibbs.
Captain, Kerrie Ryan almost doubled Albion’s advantage three minutes later, but her shot was superbly tipped over the bar by Gibbs.*
But Albion did not have to wait much longer for a second goal, as a fine delivery by O’Hagan found Stenning, who nodded the ball home at the far post with 13 minutes left on the clock.
O’Hagan then made it three in the 81st minute, after she latched on to Lily Agg’s pass and carved open the Millwall defence, before producing a looping shot over Gibbs to wrap up the game.
Stenning added further gloss to the scoreline in the 90th minute, when Rabson’s surging run down the left led to a perfectly timed ball for the striker to slot home and compound more misery on the hosts.
Lovett was delighted with the performance from his players and admits he is surprised how they keep improving each week.
He told seagulls.co.uk, “I’m over the moon with that win today, the girls performed really well against a strong Millwall side. If we keep performing like that, then there’s no reason why we can’t progress to the latter stages of the cup.
“In the first 20 minutes they bossed the game and we showed them too much respect, but once we came out of our shells, it showed in our football and all the players played to the best of their abilities.”
Albion: Mangan (GK); Carter, Ryan (c), Waine, Hinton; Adams (Strudwick 90+1), Barton, Agg, Rabson; O’Hagan, Stenning (Stow 90+1). Sub not used: Sole.
